I copied this one... used a sack coat pattern modified, I have original Waterbury frock coat gold guilt washed buttons on it.
It's rough both sides elk hide with smoke gold finish.
It's about 17 years old now and looking great.

I'll get a photo , but my camera is at work....

I found some palomino deerskin that would look great with some coffee to darken it a bit, but it seems light...maybe 2-3 oz.  The same place has some elk close to the same color at 4-5 oz.  What should I be looking at here?

Forty Rod-

I guess the braintan deer in my leggins and coat is less than 4 oz.  I have a vest that is about the same, but is fully faced so feels heavier.  I used to have elkskin pants, and I decided  it would be too heavy for this coat.  Then again, I don't have to wear it in really cool weather.  Got a wool coat for that!
Ain't like the old days, but it'll do!

The only picture I have of my coat. Ir was bought from a vendor at the Cowboy Festival at Melody Ranch and made in Colorado. The guy I got it from stated that no two were alike. It is lined and the bones are real and the beading is nicely done. It was $350.
Forty Rod may have seen it because the picture is from Cajon Cowboys Legends of the West.

Glad to see I'm not the only "hawg body" around.  ::)

Actually, you look mighty good, a lot better than me.  (But I got  bunch of years head start on you.)

Hawg body! Sheessh! My hawg body just slimmed down 25 pounds.

I've seen your coat, Howdy, and it's a humdinger. There are a lot of really great looking coats out there.  I want to make something unique, something of my own, just to see if I can, so I'm collecting all the ideas I can.

Thanks for the input and keep it coming.

Doc, that's a great looking coat you made...  And Howdy, a great looking coat you bought.

As luck would have it. I found a picture of my elkskin coat all by itself without my ugly kisser in the way. One thing you can't tell from the pictures is how soft the leather is. Real nice. No buttons, you tie it closed.
