Just guessing here (& funnin', too).....but suppose the fellow in the back got a bit wild with the bottle prior to having the photo.
They dressed him and tied him to a post for the photo.
Maybe even his bachelor party ??

I can't quite recall who that is, but I think it may be artist Frederick Remington! I believe he was out in the Southwest during this time period.

Remington was only 16 in 1877 amd did not go west at all till 1881.  Although that guy does bear a resemblance to Remington even as an older man"
