Can you put a navy square trigger gaurd on an army conversion?

I'm thinking of spiffing up my new R-M army conversion.

Will an Uberti navy squared trigger gaurd drop into (in theory) this army revolver?
If not, did any Italian company ever make a squared gaurd for the army?

Yes! in theory.

You will probably need to fit the sides of the trigger guard to the sides of the frame. The screw holes are on the same pattern.

    You will have to change the backstrap too. Dont forget, the Navy grip is smaller than the Army grip. You may be able to extend the Navy trigger guard to mate with the Army backstrap.

Yep.  I've done several.  Fitting is necessary.  I do recommend you use Brass frames.  No re-blue, plus, I don't think the square back is available in steel.  A Caveat though ...... I'm talking about Uberti guns.
I don't know if you can play the same swap game with Pietta guns.  Some of Pietta's guns have odd size frames.

If you get the earlier Navy small squareback triggerguard you may have to shorten the trigger, or get the short trigger for the 1st Model Navy.

A couple of years back I got the three Uberti SAA pieces, rear grip frame, trigger guard and grip panel, off Ebay and put them on my Cimmaron '60 RM Conversion.  They fit and looked as good as the original without one bit of work on my part but I do realize this to be a hit or miss thing.  Out of ten Uberti SAA grip frame size guns only ones fit is way out and probably at least half can interchange without ever being noticed, when talking complete assembly change.  Considering that Uberti sells the complete and finished grip assemblies, I would think that most will add right on within what they consider reasonable tolerances.  OH, my one that is a lousy fit up on anything other than the frame it came on happens to be on one out of a set of six Evil Roy pistols.  I think that one gun has an actual frame match up that wasnt milled square as unfit grip assemblies seem to actually twist on it.

I bought a 1980s era .44 Cal Pietta '1851' Colt, serial # 574XX.  Shortly after, I was given a squareback Navy trigger guard.

The original owner of the guard knew nothing of its history, wether it was original Colt, Pietta, or Uberti.

After I removed the old guard, I found I would have to remove about 3/8" of trigger to get the 'Navy' squareback guard to fit. Since this pistol is a 'holster queen' for a reenactment group(i.e., will never be fired or pulled from the holster), I figured the 1851 army trigger guard would have to do.

Unless I end up winning the lottery and have just too many bucks to handle (yeah, like that is gonna happen), the roundback trigger guard is gonna have to do ....
