Pondering a new SASS outfit. Range site selection?
« on: December 16, 2009, 11:52:42 AM »
Nebraska Pards:

For over a year now, we've been parleying about a new place to shoot & organizing a SASS-based club in S/E NE.
The big holdback has been selecting & working on a site into a 6+ stage range.  And hopefully our stages will be divided by birms.
We have 2 possible sites with steep hills as the impact area & existing dwelling at maximum distances from the firing lines.

A. The larger site is a bit harder to access & has a stream that could prove to be a hassle.
B. So we may have to settle for the smaller one.  That one could only give us a 130 yd firing line length.  ???

We'd appreciate any words of wisdom from any pards who've recently built ranges.  What have you encounted?
Any helpful hints appreciated.

We wanted to sign up with SASS before we actually got a range up & going....No dice.   :'(
They want a range first.  Then a club.
I'm fairly sure we could just add our range to the gunshop insurance policy.  It would be cheaper that way.  Gotta do some lawyer talking now.

We're pondering the outfit might be called the Table Rock Area Pistoleros.  or TRAP, for short.

Some thoughts..

130 yards seems plenty long for Cowboy shoots, but a stream close by would be neet as long as it's not a flooding hazard.
Acces from a main road is something to consider.  use of the landscape for berms and backstops as much as possible will minimize dirt movoig expences.  6 dseperate divided bays aren't neccesary at first.  maybe start with 3 double wide bays that can be divides later.
Shade might be a consideration.

Keep us posted.  It will be good to have another range in the area.

It's still in the planning stages.  I have a guy who's going to be dozing out some brush/trees/fence soon.  And I will have him do a couple of hours of rough range prep into the steep side of a hill.
There we have about 150 yds of firing line length and maybe 30 yds of range depth.

But we won't get much more than that done this next year because I will be out of the country.
