How to tie a string or bow tie
« on: December 15, 2009, 11:01:50 PM »
Is there a specific way to tie a string or bow tie? I know how to tie a regular bow like you'd do with your shoes, but what about those skinny little ribbons that are wrapped around your neck?

It seems silly to pay for something like this "Deluxe Western Ribbon" tie if I can just tie a specific knot in a Ribbon:

You tie it essentially the same way you tie regular boot/shoe laces - then, you adjust the bow for 'looks' and length.

If you use a ribbon,- make sure you use a silk gros-grain one - ask about those at a fabric shop - and hem the ends neatly.

You 'may' find it gratifying to know that they had pre-tied ties available during the era - just as they do today, for bow ties.

A tie 'made' as a tie will display better, because of the heavier construction - while one made from ribbon stock will fall limp.

I use a 'real' one - it's 6' long - you start at the Adam's Apple and the ends go to the rear and back around - wrapping once and then the knot is tied in front as a simple bow tie.

Takes about a minute to tie - takes longer than that to adjust.

TLD, I looked at clip ons but it would be very obvious with my collar. Ribbon is easy to get so I thought I'd try it and be PC.

Wait a minute - did I read that right? A 6 foot long ribbon?

Indeed...

It's Black gros-grain silk - 6' long X 2"wide - folded over and stitched, and made sometime in the late 1890's.

A plain ribbon will look exactly like wilted gift wrap.
