Need a good LITE load for 45 LC w 200gr RNFP
« on: October 12, 2009, 09:07:37 PM »
I need a good safe light load for my daughters 45 LC SAA coboy revolvers.
I use Clays and Trail Boss.  Could possibly use other powders if necessary for a really sweet load.
If it is not Kosher to post load data please PM or email me.
Thanks in advance.

I use 6.0 grains of Trail Boss behind a 200 grainer, and nice load.

IMR's load data says 5.5 to 6.5gr for TB.  I use 6gr and it's a good load. I've also used less (like 5.8 or 5.7). Your shells with get a little dirty with blowback but that's no big deal. A lot of folks in our SASS club use Clays but I don't remember the load off the top of my head. Look it up and load at the middle or less, I'm sure you'll do fine.

Me 2. Works fine in my revolvers and rifle. BTW, W-W primers.

5.0 to 5.2 gr. of clays is what I have used for years with a 225 gr. .45 bullet.

I shoot Classic Cowboy with my 45s, so I want to keep the load as light as possible.  I'm using 5.6 of TrailBoss behind a 200 gr RNFP and I'm getting good accuracy with both my pistols ( Ruger OMV - 5.5 in. barrel) and with my rifles (1860 Henry).  The rifle gets some blow by, but unless you are going with heavier loads in the 45 Colt (and, according to some, heavier bullets), blow by and dirty cases are a fact of life with 45s.  I just tumble the cases in the lovely Lyman Green corn cob for a couple of hours and the dirty cases are just a memory...

I also shoot Classic Cowboy so low recoils are a must. My wife also shoots Classic Cowgirl occaisionally and uses the following loads to. If you don't mind loading two differant rounds here's a couple of recipes for .45.

Rifle: 6.2 grns of  Vihtavuori N320, 200 grn bullet, large magnum pistol primer (Federal)

Pistol: 6.4 grns of  Vihtavuori N320, 160grn bullet, large magnum pistol primer (Federal)

Vihtavuori is a real clean powder. The pistol loads are real easy to handle and real accurate. I have used the 200 grainers in the pistols with little differance but are a little less accurate.

Vihtavuori is tough to get sometimes so I'm working on pistol loads with HP-38 in 160 & 180 grainers.

I am using 5.0 gr. of Trail Boss AND 200 gr. bullet -- I shoot it in a USFA Rodeo and a Marlin coyboy in 45 LC. Not much recoil that I can feel and very little blow back on the rifle. For cowboy shooting the loads hit where they are suppose to. Hope this helps.

... I am using 5.0 gr. of Trail Boss AND 200 gr. bullet...

I had used this load briefly - because I misread the load data  :-[, but IMR/Hogdon's published minimum for a 200 gr LRNFP bullet in .45 Colt is 5.5 gr of Trail Boss.  I try not to go below the manufacturer's minimums (and maximums), so that is why I'm loading 5.6 gr.  Recoil is about as light as the 5.0 grain loads I ran before I realized my mistake.  Find the load data at http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp.
