Front sight question?
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:55:10 PM »
Howdy fellas,
I was wondering if anyone might know the difference in 1000's between the dovetail on a USA gun and the Italy made guns.
I have 2 of the Lyam 17?? front sights which I realy like. I put one of them on my cheap sharps and realy liked the sighting plane. I was having troble getting it to group, that is when I noticed the front sight was moving!! So I install the Globe sight that I ordered for my rifle, it only has a post and I don't like it. If I could find out the difference I was going to try brass shim stock on the bottom and front side.
I would be great full for any help!
Thanks ACE

You could try peening the bottom of the sight, with a punch, to tighten it up.

Ace, I have a Pedersoli Sharps Competition and it has the 3/8 in frt. You don't say which Italian gun you have. Why not call Buffalo Arms. They have all the sights and could steer you in the right direction. Later David

Get an empty Coke can and cut a piece out of it.  The metal is very thin and you can cut it with a scissors.  Makes great shims and they are thinner than most brass you can can find.

Also, if the sight fits well, has no up and down movement, and just slides back and forth in the dovetail with no slop, you can use a drop of Red loctite.  Once its set, it ain't gonna move.

Thanks Guys,
Pettifogger I had thought of the pop can as a shim, and I might do that! It goes in the dovetail snug, but after shooting it, it will move a little cockeyed!
Thanks

Ace, if the Coke can is too thin so you would have to use 2 shims - cut up a tuna fish can

Did you do any filing on the Lyman globe base?  I ask because the Lyman's have a shoulder angle that is wider than the Italian dovetail cuts.  They always have to be filed to fit the dovetail slot on the rifle

Hunt around and find yourself a small bottle of Loctite "Stud Locker" sealant (think it's the green liquid)

Get your sight EXACTLY where you want it to be.

Put a drop of the Stud Locker on the edge of the metal (the capillary action will pull it right in/around all the close fitting surfaces)

I promise you it WON'T go anywhere!  ;)
