.45 Cal. Schofield Ammo Boxes
« on: July 28, 2009, 11:38:10 PM »
I keep seeing wooden reproduction Army Green .45 Schofield ammo boxes, but can't seem to find who is making them.

I would like to use one as the base of a gun cart if I could find one.

Is there a commercial source, or a member who is willing to sell a single box?

Thanks for the help....

WWE,

Sgt. John Chapman, who is here in CAS City, makes those boxes.  Send him a PM and he can help you out!

Hi Dr Bob,

I sent him an email that I found on another post.

It is all that Harry Potter's fault. I was watching the train scene in one of the movies and an old Victorian hand truck caught my eye.

Such is the hold that SASS has on me that instead of watching the movie, I began to think of a gun cart disguised as a shootist's steamer trunk and ammo box waiting to be loaded ...

So far I have some antique all metal wheels and a pair of five foot plow handles.

It would help terribly if someone had an old hand truck like the one below with all rotten wood, that I could take the metal parts from. Otherwise I have to pay a welder BIG TIME wages to make copies for me ...

I have seen a couple of gun carts made from the railroan hand truck.  They are really hard to push around on gravel or uneven ground.  I made one using the plow handles, it has about 12" wheels with what appears to be a gun crate.  It works well but is cumbersome to load in a vehicle.

Wadd, he moved back East a few months back. I have him on Facebook. I will try to get an updated email for you if he is still making them.

Dalton et al,

Thanks for all your support; I have gotten in touch with him, and ad soon as he has his shop in place he is going to email me.

In the meantime, a friend has given me an old three wheel jogger's stroller, and I am workin on making a guncart out of it ..... and am waiting on a Baikal upland 26: barrelled SXS to come back from a gunsmith so I can finish the dimensions and strart cutting....

The second guncart is going to be a labor of love anyway, may take a year or so to get if all worked out .... so I am okay with the wait for the Schofield ammo box ....

Glad ya got hold of him Wadd.
As far as your cart goes, I have almost the same one, and have the intent of doing almost the same thing. Mine has a brake bar on it tho, so it can stop easy with a load on it.
You should check out your local grain elevator/feed stores. They may have an old one sitting around. Same cart for the most part.

The frame part taken from the stroller is exactly like the one shown below ... I an going to make a box with a 10 7/8 " wide (The minimum width of the stroller) that sits on the rear axle and angles up to sit on top of the plastic .... There will be a second 'box' that angles up from inside the first box and will lean accross a bar installed just forward of the brake lever on top of the frame... The second box outside width will be the inside of the bottom box ... and at 9 " wide internal width, should hold an SXS in the middle and a lever action on either dies of the SXS ... I am hoping that the 'horizontal' box will have just enough room for a small insulated lunch box, and the box forward of the 'gun' box will fit all my shells and stuff, becoming a 'possibles' box.

The cart will look anarchistic as all getout, but will do me until I make the other one.....

I am in the process of making my own retro-modern label and box for my .45 Colt ammo meant for my Uberti made Schofields.
