The Cowboy wasn't one to be afraid of a little 'color'.

Of course, the primary goal was to have a shirt without holes and relatively clean, so patterns and colors weren't a big deal, if that criteria was first met.

Actually now that I think of it. I used the term "shirting" when in all reality a good portion of those prints are probably most likely from extant dresses. I have seen a few shirts that were wild prints, but only in pictures. The 2 original shirts I've veiwed in private collections were 1 plain and 1 stripe. The stripe was an 1870s commercial make with very long placket.
