I'm sure this subject has been around before, but I'm new to loading live rounds, and need to know what kind of powder charge people use for the 45 schofield, and OAL of the round.  One of my reenacting buddies just got a 45 schofield, and we both are looking foreward to live firing them. Any help would be appreciated. Rick.......12th Illinois

I assume, of course, we are talking the Holy Black here, yes? I shoot a Spencer in .45 Schofield - I load Starline brass with 28g of FFg, a 235g/.452 bullet (GOEX bullets lubed with SPG), WLP. OAL is 1.36 which seems to work fine in the Spencer. I have managed as much as 30g FFg into the cases. This is not my .45 pistol load - which is 24-25g FFg - a little lighter. Hope this helps. Oh, and if you talking smokeless, remember, that is just a passing fad.....

12th,

I'll give you a call this week.  Most of my experience with the Spencer is original 56-56 or 56-50 Taylors.  I shot one of the first 45 Schofields to come in, but that was so long ago, I don't remember what loads I used!  It was only a loaner for the article.

I'm using 27 grains FFFg beneath a Lee 230 Truncated cone.  I've found this to be the slickest feeding bullet thru my .45 Schofield Spencer.  Oal is around 1.41 or so, but you need to jigger it back and forth a bit to find what your individual weapon likes best.
