I thought I want do a little style change on the hawks I have been making from ball peen hammers. Here is what I came up with. Forged from 24 oz. hammer. White ash for the handle and lightly aged. What you think?

That looks great, pard. I like the overall appearance. Very nice design.

Mr. Willis, that design is practically identical in shape to an old 1940's-50's firemans axe that I have in my garage.

The only difference is that the blade has a 12" steel tang that was once covered by a dense rubber handle.

Have a wild guess as to what is going to happen to it now???

Outstanding hawk Mr. Willis. I did 18th century reenacting for many years and that hawk
would have been right at home stuck in my belt.

For one thing, I would never have guessed that it started out in life as a ball-peen hammer. Any particular reason for using ball-peens? Are they just a handy shape to forge, with sufficient metal for all the required features and a ready-made eye for the handle?

  Ball Peens are good metal and are a good starting point. I do redrift the eye. This one I did not redrift much but on others I will drift to accept the tear drop shaped hawk handles
