What do I have here?

Hi,

My buddy was given a 58 Remington NM Army in .44.  It was caked with old grease so I cleaned it up and took him out shooting, he is new to C&B.  The gun looks very well made, exterior is polished well, timing good and it grouped nice with .451s, it needed .454s but I didn't have any with me.  I have a 20Y/O Pietta and this gun is slightly smaller in most respects, grips narrower and shorter, bbl a tad shorter, cylinder is shorter.

Markings are on the top of the bbl.   SILE Inc.  NY, - NY
On right is a proof mark, symbol is light but it has PN under it also says Black powder Only on the right and NM Army on the left.

The gun could use a new trigger, with the hammer at full cock it is not down enough and the tip of the hammer is slightly in the sight picture.  And, my buddy wants an extra cylinder..LOL!  I'm going to see if my Pietta trigger will fit and if the spur is longer than his.

If someone knows about this "Brand" and where to get parts I'd appreciate it.

While I'm asking, he needs all the goodies that go with these guns, flask, wrench, balls & etc.  I've been out of the loop for awhile, where is a good-(cheap)- online source?

Chances are it was made by Armi San Paolo, imported by Sile & Co.
Euroarms took over and now has Armi San Paolo... for parts try

The pistol should have a makers mark somewhere (could be under bbl):

palm tree = Palmetto
ASP (usually entertwined) = Armi San Paolo
DGG (entertwined and maybe in a circle) = Eurorarms

As Major2 said above, all Euroarms now.
Dixie carries Euroarms and has parts.

I agree with Major in that is sounds like a ASP but the information that HH gave should help ya narrow the maker down.

I also agree that VTI is the best resource for replacement parts but as of late they have been lacking in some parts & have been backordering most that I have submitted.
http://www.dixiegunworks.com/default.php is another good source for parts & so far they have been able to come through for me but they don't have maker spacific parts like VTI or Taylors does "cept for a few items like Cylinders" but a Pietta internal part will be your best bet if you can not get the right maker's parts because they are usually slightly larger than the stock part & fitting shouldn't that much of a huge affair.

Any replica revolver marked SILE is a collectable.  It is one of the distributors that marked their firearms.

I took a closer look at it, under the load lever is a circle with a larger "D" and two smaller capital "G"s one above the other.  There is another stamp but it's faint and not full, I have a strong glass @ work and will bring it home to take a better look. 

The main spring is way too stiff, for that and the trigger I'll try my Pietta parts and order them if it's do-able.  The main spring adjusting screw is there but does not do anything, does not contact the spring, so I'll shave a little off the edges If I know I can get a replacment-just in case..

Where do you guys buy accessories, flasks, nipple wrench, balls and etc.  Dixie is high, I'm not thrilled with Cabelas, looking for a place that has stock and is reasonable.

These guys are affordable and well stocked.  Just don't waste yer money on a nipple wrench from them.  If yer friends gun is older, he's better off making one out of a good quality 1/4" socket.

Dern it, a good Pard gave me a link ta the chart that shows the birth years, an now can't find it now, thought I had it saved.  What I can tell you is that XXIII is 1967.  If yers is in that ball park you can figure it out by adding or subtracting a year for each Roman numeral value.  I guess you could call it a benchmark at least, unless your gun is much newer.  If my memory on how that chart worked is wrong, sombody feel free ta slap me

Thanks for all the info guys, this gun was made in 1979 as per that list above, does not sound real collectable to me, Is it?  I shaved down the edges of the hammer spring and it's much improved.  Definately needs a new trigger, the spur is worn down and rough, probably not hardened when new and that mainspring was so stiff that the hammer just wore the tip off.  A Pietta trigger will work, it's a tad too wide inside the gun and mine was a little too tall, both are good things since you can always take some off but not put it on.  The hammer full cock knotch is ok, a little rough maybe but I'll address that when i get the new trigger, maybe a few swipes with a stone and some hardening.  And she will be ready to roll.

Looks like my buddy is going to order anotherone from Cabelas and get their starter kit whick has a flask and nipple wrench so I don't need to order them.  Most places I looked at were out of stock on balls-(you guys stocking up??) but I found some Hornadys for 7.40/box which is so cheap Ii wonder If I'll ever get them...

Still have to order the trigger so Ii better get at it.

A lot of guys here cast their own balls.  If you can get Hornadays fer that price buy em.  I use them all the time an pay about 10 bucks a box.  Don't be suprised if that nipple wrench rounds off on you right off the bat an dings the bluing.  Haven't found a non-home made one yet that worked on anything other than an out of the box, brand new gun.  Mebbe that's just my luck.

1860 . . . . I keep warning folks about the Cabelas "Starter Kit"  I bought it and badly leaded my barrel with the .541 balls going thru my .454 bore.   Accuracy went to HELL after the first few rounds.   I took me a couple of weeks to figure out what was wrong and and evening of alternately soaking the inside of the barrel with vinigar and scrubbing it with a bore brush to get the lead out of it.  I then ordered .457 balls and no more problem.

Not very Authentic .. but they do sell a Copper flask and for the money you spend on the Starter kit you should be able to get the Right size balls & the copper flask..just my $0.02

Yeah, he bought a new gun with the started kit..against my advice.  He then went back and bought a proper flask.  The nipple wrench will be alright, I filed it to make a proper fit and will harden it, the plastic flask is garbage but will work for cream o wheat, the capper will only work with the taller #10 Rem caps, the short ones flip around..generally a waste of 40 bucks.  But the gun is a gem..

I didn't know about the plastic flask.  When I bought mine it was a metal flask.  But anyone better off to buy the individual stuff they need.
