Ribbon shirts are a 20th century Pow-Wow dance item, as are straight dance shirts.
Thank You sir, I appreciate the information!

I know what you mean about getting your clothes dirty...but you gotta do what you gotta do to make them look correct.

If you've ever watched the movie Tombstone, and have watched the extras with the directors commentary, one thing that struck me is that of all the things he would have done different in that film, is, he would have gotten the fella riding shotgun on the stagecoach clothes dirtier....his comment was he looked too clean compared to the rest of the actors. Trivial, but something he thought took away from the quality of the overall film.

Well sir, You have opened my eyes - I finally took steps in that direction today - I wore a new white mexican shirt  and new white canvas button fly trousers to a shoot and make a conscious effort to wipe my hands on both whilst loading and cleaning my C&B revolvers.  It was at first an effort to break "gentlemanly habits", but it certainly is taking the "new shine" off. I shall continue this experiment in properly aging this outfit by wearing it whilst doing outside chores.  A little breakfast grease, a little more dirt, some lunch gravy, more BP fouling and they should be on the right path :-)
Could perhaps frequent washing without detergent will help accelerate aging?

OCB,

That last pic -- M1 or M2?  Given the year, I probably know why you're holding it.

Professor.....
If you want to put a little Age on that new clothing without rolling around in the dirt.....add about a table spoon of walnut dye (made from walnuts) to a couple gallons of water over night...then rinse in cold water.

This will knock off the new look and give it an aged look. Before you do this experiment with a material close to what you are wearing.

You want to pre wet your shirt, let it dry so it is damp and then dye it.

Daniel......That is a M2 that I took off a dead Viet Cong.

Here's a tintype of Beth and I taken at last year's NCOWS Convention. (It's reversed, of course).

Looks good Dave,  BTW I would not roll those outfits in the dirt. Wink

A good example of more of a business look.

Gettin' my clothes dirty doesn't really present a problem for me.....but I guarantee Miss Beth ain't gonna roll this (self-sewn) outfit in the dirt.  Ain't gonna happen. Wink

Tangent, but this reminds me of when I rode motorcycles.  Guys would buy a new jacket and ask me how I got mine to look the way it did.  The only true answer was "I wore it".  Nobody could have falsley made it look the way it does.  Mighta come close, but folks could just tell that it had seen some real miles.

I think that we can manage a pic with a brewski bottle in it.  A ice cold glass mug would be PC too, but don't put yourself for us! Grin

I used to think I was the one that corrupted folks by handing them something and saying "try this" Oh so wrong...I don't hold a candle to some of my cowboy/cowgirl pards.  Grin

I came across this picture.

I think I have some pretty good stuff here. The racoon bag (holds all kinds of goodies) I got at EOT one yr Tanned hide, leather lining. The skirt that used to be a brides maids dress...Mom tore it apart and we made something useful out of it...It has leather stains, horse stains and some tears in the hem it's hard to tell but it's faded too. The knife was made by LongLine Charlie. I love his work! That guy next to me I think he fills the bill of PC...he had shot all day too so I'm pretty sure his clothes were well used that day  Wink That's Tensleep for those of you that may be wondering.

I'm here, been working on a couple other projects, but I still have more pictures.

This is a couple who came to Rock Creek Station last year, she does basket weaving and they wanted to have the look with out spending too much money, the hat cost the lady almost as much as the skirt and blouse di, but she had shoes already that would work, less than $200 with the hat.  Her husband had a pair of round toed boots already, $35 on thepants, $25 on the shirt and $30 on the palm leaf hat.  He bought a fairly large one because he needed protection from the sun, a "Pork Pie: type one might have had a better look, but not a bad set up for a first trip out:

They were fun to work with, both setting them up in clothes and to spend the weekend with, looking forward to seeing them there this year.

ferrotype of Brass, c1885, by R. Gibson

« Reply #143 on: March 07, 2009, 07:28:04 pm »

Below is a ferrotype of me and my lady Maria from last summer at Gibson’s in Gettysburg. Rob enjoyed making the image as he usually doesn’t deal with 1870s types who bring in their own clothes for pictures - he's usually dealing with CW images. It was a great period experience and a lot of fun having the image made together, and as it was a bright day only took a seven second exposure on the wet-plate camera. Hard to see in the picture but Maria’s reticule and one of her original fans in on the table, my Family Heirloom Weavers repro carpet bag is underneath it by my feet.

My outfit is just a run of the mill brown with woven window pane wool sack suit, proper Robert Land lace-up shoes and a Clearwater Hats low crown bowler. However, Maria’s outfit turned out really nice and was a great sewing project that captures the mid-1870s fashion of walking dress pretty well – short overskirt, long underskirt, representative collared bodice and a decent underskirt train though that can’t be seen in the image. Since the picture was made I added throg closures to the bodice and a series of bows to the sides of the over skirt so now it's officially complete. We made the dress and petticoat from Ageless Patterns patterns. the dress is made from quite heavy brown cotton with very thin woven window panes of violet, lighter brown and indigo (almost a sort of plaid but not quite). The sleeves needed some re-work as the pattern was a bit off (or I was off when I cut the fabric – likely more my error than the pattern’s…!).

Maria’s boots are Robert Land lady's lace-ups, though button-up would be even better. Her hat is a black 100% wool felt that I reshaped for the right period pronounced fore/aft curvature with a knife-pleated hat band made from the same fabric as her dress. She has one of her favorite period hat pins, with a decorative silver head, holding on her hat. Next projects are a house dress, an 1878-82 era walking dress (no bustle on these), a couple of common dresses and an apron or two for camp. We’re having fun making her stuff and are currently embarking on a wool coat – takes a lot of wool for the pattern we have and think it will come out nice.

Here is the ferrotype from Gibson’s studio showing Maria’s outfit to good effect:

Here is a sample of her dress fabric which matches up as close as we could get it to several fabrics we’ve seen in period images. As her dress is not available right now for me to photograph in color here’s a swatch of it. I used to as a background for one of Maria’s cameos and my cameo tie stick-pin for display in the library. Hope it comes out well enough to see to fabric colors.

This was taken in 2004 for a magazine article....It's a cut out that was sent to me by a friend. I don't remember where or for what magazine...I was a little under the weather and not in a very good mood. Angry  But it does give a good description of what I am wearing.

Howdy Del, long time.

Here are two tintypes I had taken by different photographers, both wearing one of my favorite outfits.  I've had the vest for many many years, wish I could find a few others like it.

Need to get one taken this year in my good frock coat.
