Period Correct & NCOWS Ok Derringer

I think the inventors name is spelled with one r.
Anyway, we shot some derringers in one of the stages last weekend.
It got me to thinking . . . What derringers should I be a lookin' at?
I would really like to find a period okay
percussion
version to shoot along with my LeMat (I wish it were 41 caliber, but alas). (8 + 2 = 10) I guess I would have to check with my local El Presidente to see if it would be okay, but I am thinking this would be a historic shooting scenario.
Could this be a way to shoot a Cap n' Ball version of Working Cowboy? Can I? huh? Can I? Can I?
Shooting patched Minie Balls from the LeMat's shotgun barrel is also quite fun. The target chimes like a church bell.
I would like to ogle at some cartridge derringers as well.
Awaiting your reply,

Not too many derringer shoots in NCOWS, everybody seem to like the little pocket pistols better. And many places that have PP's in their matches call for four shots, so that puts a muzzle loader at a disadvantage.
Now personally, I like derringers. And I have a bunch of them, starting with a repro Colt single-shot .22 short. But my favorite is an original Remington double-barrel in .41 rimfire. Ammo is available from Navy Arms. It's a mite expensive, but rates really high on the "cool" scale.
For many years I used an American Derringer in .44 Magnum (!) which was allowed, even though it had the stupid cross-bolt safety. I also have a Uberti derringer in .357 Magnum, but they are really rare.
I guess what I am trying to say is that there are derringers available out there, but sometimes you have to look for them.

Thanks for your reply Grizzle!
Look what I found

In my fantasy, I am thinking that a lot of card game gun fights may have started with a derringer and progressed to revolvers.

Reliable pocket revolvers are the most practical for continued use and there were enough of them built so that you can find spare parts.
The little 'Colt Model 4' derringers are available - as are their clones made by Butler, and someone else.
The Colts are 'real' derringers - made by Colt and given a 'model number' - the others aren't.
Be advised that they're all built with zinc frames and the barrels are lined - they're not for heavy use at all.
You could also look for the replica of the Sharps - as made by Uberti for Navy Arms back in the late '60's - early '70's.
They're quite nice and once you figure out the barrel firing sequence, they're moderately accurate.
I pre-stage mine so that the top left barrel is the first fired - the rest follow along in a sort of 'square' pattern.
No one makes an accurate reproduction of the Remington.
Vaya,

HJS down in Brownsville TX made a stainless steel version of the Sharps 4 barrel, but they are out of business now.

The model that has caught my eye is made by Cimmaron. It has a .38 and .32 H & R Barrel. I can load .32 Shorts, Longs, H & R Magnum and .38 . I am thinking .38 would be period correct, would the Shorts and Longs be also?
Is the black matte finish close enough for government work? As long as it is like blued only darker. I hope it is not the powder coat finish. Or should I go with the chrome? Nickel would be period correct, right?
Here it bees -

Looks just like the old Davis models. I have one in 32 and another in 38. The 38 keyholes at 10 feet or so
. The cross bolt safties are a pain.

Matte finish is not allowed in NCOWS. If you remove the matte and blue it then it will be OK! Nickle is also OK.

If some one offers to loan you something, that is a good way to try it before you buy it.
I had a Colt clone act up on me during a match.
My back up also acted up
and a friend loaned me a 5 1/2" 1875 Remington copy. There were 4 stages left to go and I shot the rest of the match clean.
The next spring I traded him out of that Remmy. It has been my main match pistol ever since.

Chiappa had a new line of derringers at 2009 shot show.
They look like a Remington clone, except they are chambered for .22LR. Has anyone handled one of the Chiappa's?
I'm wondering if these Chiappas will trump the Cobras in quality? (I've not been real impressed with the Cobras that I've handled.)
