John Wayne Coat
« on: January 21, 2009, 11:12:15 AM »
In many of his later Westerns, starting with "Rio Bravo", and on through "Cahill" and "True Grit", John Wayne wore a canvas coat similar to an LL Bean Field Coat.  River Junction Trading Company offers one they call the "Rio Bravo", but it isn't quite right; it has corderoy cuffs and collar.  Does anyone have any idea wherre to come up with the coat I am refering to?  Thanks!

I call mine a Barn Coat. I got mine at a western wear store several years ago. Mine is also unlined.

I've also seen that coat made out of leather.  The John Wayne style coat, from my searching, has been in almost every western store catalog!

Carhartt makes a passable coat.  Just buy the one with buttons and not the zipper.  I changed out the rivet button things for Tin buttons to make it more period correct.

that's a great looking coat.  you're right too, wouldn't take much modding if you buy the button one.  great price too!  I have a ranchwear apparel store out here in Flagstaff, looking forward to heading over there.

According to the Carhartt rep that comes into our store, the rivet buttons are at least as old as Carhartt which started using them in 1889 when the company was founded.

BTW Carhartt has all their original patterns, we have tied the rep up, shoved horseshoe nails uner his toe nails, but have not had any real luck in getting them to do a run or two of the 1889 stuff.  But we'll keep hounding them. :)

Does anyone have an old Carhartt catalogue?

I read an article just last week.  Filson is now a fashion label!  So maybe Carhartt can emulate them.

maybe cowboys can benefit as well.

Just a thought, perhaps if a bunch of us would write them, and ask them since they have the original patterns if they would consider making a few small runs of the old stuff.  If it sold, I would think common sense would say to keep it up.  Don't know, but we tried what we could.

I would say write rather than E-Mail, let me see if I can come up with the proper place to do the most good. ;)

See we understand in the north the need for this stuff.  The two major CAS clothes suppliers are located way down south and needless to say don't seem to want to make winter type clothes either.

Oh well,  I really enjoyed sewing the tin ones on after I cut the rivet ones off.   :P

Now I'm curious as to exactly when they came out, now I got to know and have another research project, thanks a lot pard, you only did that to try and drive me nuts. ;D

Wonder if it will be like "wing nuts" and have a different name than rivet buttons, also know them as hammer buttons and batchlor (sp)buttons cause batchors ain't 'spossed to know how to sew. ;D

Hey slap
I was looking for a new speed rig and hit Wildlife out of curiosity.  Never heard of them b/f your post.  I ended up buying one of their new rigs - two lawman holsters and a moneybelt.  I think they owe you a commission. ;D  Very good price for the product.  Not as good as a $400 rig but good enough for my abilities.
