Bird Cookin..........
« on: November 19, 2008, 09:28:59 PM »
TYQ thinks I'm a Dinosaur.........
I insist on a butter soaked cheese cloth draped over the turkey as it's cookin, to brown the bird........

I baste the cheese cloth in butter as it's cookin............

Am I really out of the dark ages?...........

I need some input from you Pards...........

Some people are happy with a package of Rice A Roni, Zatarans Dirty Rice or a pre basted Butterball with Stove top Stuffing and Hungryman dehydrated Potatos and margerine.

Others may like a sack of rice, a sack of potatoes, butter, a loaf of bread, vegetables and a slew of individual spices and a turkey right off the chopping block or freshly blasted with a scattergun and roasted in a wood fired oven.

I would rather be in the dark ages than eating Rice A Roni!

I will boil a couple of cups of water with some molassas, paparika, garlic, tyme, sage, dill weed and just a touch of cinnamon and ginger. This will be cooled and added to a salt water brine (along with a couple of shots of bourben for good measure ;)) and the bird soaked in it for a day then the bird will be smoked for a day.

Had some real strong wind a couple of months ago and blew a couple of big limbs off the pecan tree and we have a brick smoker in the back yard.

Well, made it back from Oregon without a problem with United Airlines.  It was a great weekend, with rain only on Thursday, when we were all inside stuffin’ ourselves anyway.
By the way, this is what the second bird in 5 days looked like.  This one was Nesco’ed.

In these parts we call them slow cookers.........
TYQ will stick a pot roast, taters, carrots, onions, etc in it in the morn......
By the time were both home from work, supper is ready..........

So Nesco is the Brand, the manufacturer in your neck of the woods.........

I gots it straight now.............. ;D

Yup, slow cookers is essential to modern life.........

I was born and raised for the first 21 years of my life in Wisconsin, so I think it has more to do with what you had in the house.  ??? ??? We had a Nesco slow cooker, and my Dad had a Skil circular saw and a Sabre  jig saw. :)  After that ever circular saw was called a Skil saw, every jig saw was a Sabre saw.  I guess that went for Cresent wrenches too.  ::) ;D

I inherited one of those vintage Nesco roasters and I'm gonna experiment with some meats to start with. I wanna work my way up to a Turkey.
