Came across a pretty nice 1866 Winchester on one of the auction sites - however, the elevator had some weird marks all over it - anyone have any idea what might have done this?

My WAG is that it might have been caused by being carried across the saddle horn in a leather pommel-loop.

Is it a saddle ring carbine?   Maybe from banging against some part of the saddle Huh.  What it really looks like to me is that the elevator got stuck from perhaps powder fouling and the gun also had weak springs.  Someone had to beat on it in order to get the action open. Undecided

Like Will said and Roo alluded to.

Stuck carrier.  Field expedient method of freeing the part.  It must have gotten REALLY stuck.  Perhaps it rusted shut.  Shocked

 Roll Eyes

OH WAIT!  It was used in a firefight and a near miss hit the rifle, not the owner.  The bullet jammed the carrier.  You can't see in the picture 'cause it's on the TOP and Mongo couldn't show/link to THAT picture.

Yeah ... THAT'S what happened.
