Problem With Cocking Pedersoli Sharps
« on: June 22, 2008, 06:51:07 PM »
I have Pedersoli Sharps in 45-70 that I just put a Dave Crossno 22 insert in.

While shooting it this weekend everything was fine but then it wouldn't stay at full cock unless I set the trigger first. I took the lock out of the gun and it would cock fine until it was reinstalled in the action. This has never happened before and I wonder what the problem might be. It's like the fly isn't allowing the hammer to go to full cock unless the trigger is set.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. BTW the rifle shot great and with the MVA sights made short work of the 200 yard rams.

The set trigger isn't set too tight is it?

I don't think so.  I loosened it until I thought it might fall out.  I also tightened it more.  Neither helped :(
It's strange how setting the trigger first allows it to come to full cock. ???

Will,

It sounds like the set trigger is resting against the sear. When this happens the spring on the set trigger can force the trigger against the sear just enough to keep the sear from fully engaging the full cock notch in the tumbler. The set trigger assembly may be inlet a little too far into the stock. A temporary shim should help determine if that is the problem.

Before you do anything else - go to the Pedersoli web site and look under "support" - "general hints for rifles" - this will explain alot about that set screw - I had an accidental discharge at the range - turned out that by snapping the trigger guard closed, dropped the hammer - luckily I was pointed downrange - this should also clear up your trigger/hammer problem.  Just to let you know - the set screw - with the spring - adjusted all the way down, will cause an accidental misfire - Please read the PDF on setting the set screw!!!!!!

"Jest an update - my whole problem turned out to be a weak mainspring - got a new one, adjusted the two screws and everything is slick as bear grease."
