Uberti SAA problems
« on: April 25, 2008, 02:32:24 PM »
Thanks in advance for any help. Just bought 2 uberti cattleman. One is brand new the other is an older model. Went out to shoot them today and on both of them the cylinder over travels. The new one is worse than the older one. It does not matter how fast or slow you go and does it at random. Can't believe both guns are like this. Is this a common problem with there pistols? Also took out my 66 yellow boy and it worked great!  Would like to sart cas soon but need pistols that work. Thanks   ;D

I can't say for sure without actually seeing the guns, but with my experience with Ubertis (and that goes back to 1974) I would suspect that the bolt legs that actuate the cam on the hammer are not properly timed. It would be worth your while to have action jobs on them by a Single Action specialized gunsmith. It is not something you want to tackle unless you have experience.
If you do not want to go that route, contact the company and let them know the problems you are having.

There are several causes for throw-by.  All require some knowledge to correct.  It starts with a badly timed bolt, badly fitted bolt, bad trigger/bolt spring, wrong trigger/bolt spring or .......... a combination of ALL of the above.  A competent SAA guy needs to look at the guns.  For the new one, it comes with a warranty.  Use the warranty.
I don't mind separating folks from their money when necessary, but use the warranty.  Also, ask the warranty folks if they will look at the older one.  Some times they will fix them for free if it is obvious the gun was not set up right to begin with.
It's real easy to really screw up a SAA if you don't understand how they work and time.  If you haven't worked on them before, for every part your going to touch, call VTIgunparts and order two new replacement parts.  You'll need 'em.
