GAF style Matches ?
« on: April 11, 2008, 10:36:59 PM »
:D Good evening all; At Fort Verde (This weekend is the Forts "Day of the soldier" event) today a discussion came up about CAS  Military Matches and how to get one started here in Arizona. How are The Military matches set up and at what ranges are standered? Are they best based on a two gun match or a four gun match and are the types of firearms the same as what are acceptable as stated in the GAF marksmanship web site. Most all of us are longtime CAS shooters and very interested in the military side of history. I think this would benefit both the shooters and GAF.
Please advise!
I will be passing out as many GAF Brochures as I can print up this evening to aid in recruiting new GAF members.

Respectfully

1st Sgt.  8)

http://www.grandarmyofthefrontier.org/   Go here and review our Battle Rifle standards and class structure on our compitition page.  Target placement is CAS standard, though we encourage a little more distance for rifle.  All GAF classes are 2 gun, Rifle and handgun. ("Forager Scout" the exception, using Shotgun and Handgun) with multiple reloads encouraged.  Note too that in the "Milspec" classes the handgun is related IN PERIOD to the rifle used, not limited by action type.  Course of fire is CAS styled.  though we tend to base our scenarios on military history, or at least  military imagination.

Though we encourage Milspec weapons, "cowboy" guns have their own uses in the various "Scout" classes.

Thank You again

I built the first 2 GAF matches myself and still have the shooters book.  Send me a PM with your email address if you are interested in reviewing on.

I did the 2007 GAF GRand Muster and have some of the stages left on my computer you can message me also and I will send them to you so you can get a rough idea.  I personally like to set the targets a little further away then CAS standard.  But thats just my personal preference.  Just make sure you include alot of reloads on the clock thats what makes it challenging.

I'd offer the '08 stages but since they haven't been shot yet I don't want to let the cat out of the bag ;)

Why not make plans to attend the '08 GAF Grand Muster and see how its done? We'd love to have you.

I will be putting a match together, a one day shoot in the state of Iowa. The match will be held at an independent range. I am basing the shoot upon the "Border Wars", battles in the Missouri Kansas area. I will have to break somewhat from the guerrillias aspect, (need for long arms), I have learned quite a bit in reading up on the subject before writing stages.

Dusty,  It might be quite interesting if you did a stage around the Baxter Springs confrontation between 400+ of Quantrill's men and the US contingent who were in the process of building a fortification just north of there. Needless to say, if you want shooters to continue the match, they should be portraying the guerrillas.

One I am planning to use for a stage is an occurrence at Centalia, MO. Numbers wise an even match up, but with the way Johnson deployed his force, it was a federal disaster. I will look into Baxter Springs.

I've got scenarios from 3 Kansas GAF matches - 2 were Kansas "state" championship GAF matches.  All three were 2 gun and based on military history in Kansas.  Glad to share.  If you want them, send me your email.
