Conhos on Spur Straps - What's the secret?
« on: March 05, 2008, 10:37:55 AM »
I have seen a bunch of great spur straps with conchos  over the outside button slot...how do you go about doing this?

I have worked through several solutions in my head but they all seem either more trouble than their worth or just plain unworkable...

A slot in the strap to accomodate the loop of the concho - then a 'T'-shaped piece of leather with 'ears' to slip through the bar to hold in place - with the button hole at the end of the strap.

You can vary the length to fit - with the actual adjustment strap and buckle at the opposite end.

It's even simpler in practice than the explanation.

Howdy
Another way that works best for me is, if I'm putting the concho on a rosette I wet mold the rosette to have a
bit of a dome to give room for the spur button underneath when I stitch on the rosette. If I'm mounting the concho
on the strap I will make a round leather disk to sew under the strap to mount the button. I'll try to post a pix of each
in a little while.

I'll second St. George. That's the method I almost always use.

But it does require a bridle back concho rather than a screw-on or rivet-on type.

WC,

Those are some fine looking spur straps. Sir!!  Very nice stitching and  I noticed a small glue line.  That is very good construction on some high quality pieces!!

Kind Regards,

Panhead Pete

A 'bridle-back concho' is a standard concho - the type used with a horse's bridle and featuring a rectangular wire 'loop' on the reverse, instead of a screw.

Here are a few photos of the most common way conchos were mounted on spur straps, circa 1880-1930.  The first two photos are a pair that I mounted and the second set of photos show an original pair made by F.A. Meanea around 1890.

Adios,
Buck

I'll post some good pictures of these spurs and conchos, later this afternoon.  It's Easter you know, so we're looking for a giant wabbit today.

Here are the photos you asked for.  I had Frank Schultz at Bitterroot Bit and Spur make these spurs and sombrero conchos for me about 16 years ago.   They are completely hand made, from the engraving to the heel chains.  Even the rope edge and hat band on the sombreros is hand twisted silver and copper wire.   The inside of the heel band is shown in the third photo.

The last two photos are a pair of original Buermann spurs #1271 with a pair of old F.A. Meanea, Cheyenne marked straps.  I bought these 30 years ago off a ranch near Chugwater, Wyoming.   Both the spurs and straps were listed in Meaneas catalog and were purchased from his shop sometime in the early 1890's.  The spurs have been used so much that the rowel pins are almost worn in two and the hole in the rowels are egg shaped.

Adios,
Buck
