Flush "shoulder stock screws" for the Pietta 1860 /1861 / 1862?
« on: February 17, 2008, 05:48:55 PM »
I need to buy a set of shoulder stock screws for the Pietta 1862 I just bought used and was wondering if someone made replacements that were not set up for the shoulder stock. I won't be putting a stock on so I would just as soon have flush "little head" screws if you know what I mean. I did look at VTI but only saw the factory "big head" ones there.
Thanks in advance,

Do you really need the screws?  Maybe just put filler screws in holes like you use for scope counts, etc.

Dusty, I will probably do that or just buy the standard screws from VTI, I just figured I would check to see if someone was selling a replacement part. Can someone measure the shoulder stock screws on thier Pietta 1860 / 1861 / 1862 frame and see what thread pattern they are? If not I guess I can take the frame to the hardware store and see if I can find ones that fit.
Thanks,

1/4 - 28.  Just go to Ace Hardware and get some 1/4 - 28 set screws.  Make sure you grind them to length so they don't drag on the guts and then lock tite them in.

I saw a posting a few months back where someone had used #12-28 nipples (or whatever fit the brand involved), cut them flush with the frame when installed.  The flash hole provided a neat oiling port....

I simply thinned the hickness of the heads and radiused the edges to make them more user friendly. Followed up by fire-blueing.

To be honest the factory screws don't bother me that much (at least not on the 1860 Army I played with) but when I bought this revolver it was missing those screws altogether. I figured since I won't be mounting a stock I might as well look for something different. I'll be off tomorrow and will head to the hardware store for some 1/4 - 28 set srews to grind to length. I'll post pics of the final product, probably next week.
