I might of bought something neat?
« on: February 06, 2008, 06:19:21 PM »
Took the wife to the Dentisit today, so i had some time to waste, so I hit a couple of flea markets, one was a bust, but at one I bought a tool, and this is what it says THE AWL FOR ALL June 12-12 , Camyers Co. Chicago Il. It works, has a round wood handle, then the metal part inside it, it has a spool then you run your thread up threw the needle. Is this a hand sticher, where you use you regural awl, punch your holes, and then use it to stich with? ??? :o ???

Please tell me what you think!

It's a single needle hand stitch-er... the way it works is ( the way I do it is I pre-pounce the holes and add the groove and drill the holes)
I the use the Awl for all by pushing it through the hole , pull the tag end of the thread and enough tail to run the entire seam.
put the needle all the way out enter the second hole pull back part way and a loop will form past the tag end through the loop and repeat the entire seam pulling snug to set the stitch with in each hole....

It works quite well, it not quite as authentic as a double needle stitch... but is handy
when planets align...do the deal !

Or what oz. do you suggest?

Ace, I think everyone here would recommend At Least 8 oz leather so that your finished product will hold its shape longer and give you a much nicer end product.  You could use the 5 oz if you double it. In other words two pieces sewn together with both the smooth sides out which will give you a very nice rig that is lined.
Lost..... I ain't never been lost...... fearsome confused fer a month er two once... but I never been lost.

I use 8-9 oz for holsters. If lined, I add a layer of 3-4 oz.

For CAS type holsters I use 8-9 oz for unlined and two pieces of 4-5 oz glued and edge sown together for lined. For more modern, concealment types of holsters I go a little lighter, say 4-5 oz with a 2-3 oz lining.

Howdy Pards,
I neever in my like have met nicer folks than you all are. I know you get tried of me asking all the dumb question! But I don't have anyone to ask around here!!!
 I need to move!!! ::) ::) ::) That isn't going to happen! :D :D
I bought that book, it was a buy now, and if you did, you would have it by the 8th, don't think that is going to happen either, got a email this morning saying got shipped yesterday ;D

I thought I would wait untill I got the book, before I ordered some leather. I am going to see if anyone over at Joplin Mo. sells leather, so I could just look and feel, before I buy. Im not going to even try any tooling untill I have made several Holsters and belts.
ONCE AGAIN, I THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Good purchase, Ace. You'll have a good time going through it.

Don't feel bad about asking questions. We all had to at one time or another. There are others that benefit from the answers, too. They just may not have thought to ask the questions. Besides, it's nice to be able to pass on things that will help you or others.

Howdy Ace
The only dumb questions are the one you don't ask.
About an hour away for Joplin is Springfield Leather. Good people to deal with.

Hey cowboywc,
Will they let you come over and look around, and buy the leather you want right then. I will also need to buy white and black thread, and a few tools.
Or do you think I need to call first and ask, I thought my book would be here today, no luck just Ice Strom.
I am so tired of this stuff.
Talk to you later

Yes I'm sure you can go in and look at the leathers and I'm sure they carry all the other supplies.

That's ok, One of my suppliers I've been doing business with for years sent my stock order to a Standing
Bear's in Utah. Took a month to figure that one out.
