Westerns using a 1876 Winchester

  I only can recall Steve McQueen as Tom Horn using a 1876 rifle, caliber 45-60. The real Tom Horn at that time was using a 1894 Winchester 30wcf.
Were there any other movies using a 1876 Winchester? I carried mine across the saddle in TOMBSTONE but I don't think any of that got used.

Well, according to Peter Sharayko, in Tombstone Guns and Gear, McMasters uses a 1876 at the Iron Springs shootout where Curly Bill is killed.  I think he has it when pinned down behind the log.  Billy Breakenridge also used an 1876 - both in reel and real life.

The 1876 was perfect for the time frame of Tombstone, and the 45-60 worked well with 45-70 BP blanks.

I know Peter. I was filling out papers that day to work on the movie, just down the road from Sabino Canyon where they filmed that shootout. I didn't know about the 1876 Win.  Peter and I were shooting the last of my live 45-75 ammo in my '76  behind the Mescal town and he wanted to buy it. Glad I never sold it. Thell Reed was always busy working on a large collection of originals that Peter had on that movie.

Sorry to jump in here, I am not signed on but I want one of these big bore rifles.  I have had an original Win '86 since 1989 but it is not the same.  I had the chance to fire an original '76 45-60 back in about 95 or 96.

My addition to the posting is:     The Last Hunt with Robert Taylor and Stewart Granger 1956.

I was very young when I first saw this movie on TV and I thought, ""Where did they get that extra large Win 73"".  Jimmy Stewarts Win '73 was the first toggle link gun on TV at the times.

I only saw Last Hunt once that I remember but that big guns image stuck.

I now have both movies and still watch both of them quite often.

Mine will be in the original 45-75 caliber when I can work it.

Is that the same Last Hunt that Lee Marvin did a remake of?  Or am I confused again?

There's one with Canadian Mounty Lee Marvin chasing Charles Bronson, but I don't recall a '76 Win.

It's about a buffalo hunt and one guy freezes in a blizzard after trying to stay warm inside of a fresh killed buffalo.
I'll have to find it, it's a good one.

I didn't see this one mentioned.  Made in 1940, it was probably the first movie to show the '76 in use.


     "North West Mounted Police"  with Gary Cooper and Robert Preston.  There were lots of original 1876 carbines and a couple of the original early 1886 carbines with long forends.   I taped it several years ago off of AMC but looked a few weeks ago, and can't seem to find it.

"The Last Hunt" is an excellent movie. Lloyd Nolan is in it as well and it may have been his last movie. Robert Taylor is an excellent bad guy. Yes, [I won't spoil the plot] but one fella climbs inside a gutted buffalo or horse to survive a blizzard and is frozen to death.

The 1876 in the movie is a rifle with all metal nicke-plated.

In the future I hope to own a Cimarron 1876 but I wish they'd make it in a 26 inch barrel, I suspect the 28 inch is a bit unwieldy although I haven't handled any.

Remember "Hombre" with Paul Newman. He played a half white/apache and packed a short barrel Win. Its been years since I saw it and I can't remember if it was a 76 or 86 Win. Richard Boone played the bad guy. Good actors, good movie.

I saw that one too. Good flick. I thought it was an 1886 Extra Light, but everything I've seen on it says it's a '73 with a button magazine. At first I wouldn't believe it, then saw some pictures of auctioned vintage rifles and lo and behold there one was labeled a '73. There are all sorts of mods and customizations floating around out there.

In the hollywood flick and remake of Monte Walsh, Tom Selleck uses an 1886 Carbine which was chambered in 50-110 when he goes after Shorty.

According to a website www.imfdb.org the only movies that have been filmed using the 1876 are as follow:

Prior to the film Tom Horn the Winchester Model 1876 was not featured in Hollywood westerns. The Winchester Models 1873, 1892 and 1894 were the rifles that got all the attention. So sayeth...www.imfdb.org
