USFA vs. STI Texican
« on: January 02, 2008, 08:04:23 PM »
I am not that impressed about the read on gunblast about the Texican as it seems very Roogerish and somewhat utilitarian compared to the USFA.  The ultra tight tolerances may also be a hinderance when shooting blackpowder loads.  Given that the USFA looks as good as it shoots I'd have to go with the USFA pre war and save $150.00.  What do you all think?

Tight tolerances are in fact better for BP as all that "ejecta" is not blown onto the cylinder pin area thereby binding up the gun.  This is based on my experiences (over 30 yrs.) shooting BP in revolvers as well as rifles & shotguns. The secret to making a revolver shoot BP is the gas ring. S&W figured this out before Colt as S&W changed (elongated) their gas rings four times between the 1st Model American & 2nd Model American.

I think the Texican is sort of like a Freedom Arms of SAA's. Granted, a great revolver but somewhat "sterile" in appeal.

Virginia Gentleman I'm not sure of the differences between the STI and the USFA.

But I sure appreciate you heating up my favorite forum.  You have done very well.

Fox Creek Kid, I would love to know that you are right about the close tolerances - but when I shoot my Rodeo, which has about a .002 cylinder/barrel clearance, with Goex factory rounds, it sure gets sticky.  I gave up after 2 cylinders.  Felt like I was going to break something pulling the hammer back.

Did you lube the cylinder pin LIBERALLY with say Crisco? I mean a LOT. Also, I don't know what bullet GOEX "factory rounds" use but most Darksiders "roll their own" and use a Big Lube bullet that carries a LOT of lube. The GOEX factory round probably only carries a small amount. Try a lot of Crisco on the cylinder pin & give it a whirl. With an Uberti conversion I once shot over 120 BP rounds in quick succession and the cylinder would still turn.  ;)

I think the STI is going to fall a little short.  It looks like it is well made, but it is slightly deviated from the true Colt design.  I did not see any patent dates on the frame.  Cylinder beveling is marginal.  The hammer spring is way to light at just under 2 lbs.  The top strap does not seem to have the same final shape, that slight flare out at the bottom and the rear.  It is also listed at 5 3/4" vs. 5 1/2".  Other than that, polishing on frame is nice, obviously case colors are exquisite when done by Doug Turnbull, but bluing on remainder does not seem to have the same depth.  I guess one way to see if it ranks high in the worthy department is to see if Doug Turnbull is going to sell them like he does USFA.

Does not look right and the grips are plain ugly. Maybe it will evolve into something. If you go to their web sight, don't download the screen saver as it has a Trojan attached to it.

Great insight, I read the article on this sight about it and I agree that while well made it doesn't really look period correct and the grips are just plain awful, sort of like putting a jet engine on a biplane.

Grips do look bad...USFA has been in the biz longer...I bet you'd have less problems buying the USFA vs. the STI.

I may become a USFA owner once the USFA Remington shows its ugly head.  ;)

Skinny Preacher,

Quit waiting.  Become a USFA owner now.  You will not regret a thing.  Once you have one you will wonder what in the world took me so long.  They are absolutely frantastic guns to own and shoot.

I am sure you will not be disappointed with the USFA.  Wish STI luck in getting some market share, but they seem to be starting from behind the 8 ball with so much un-authenticity.
