Bought the Hickcock hat from River Junction Trading company.....10x beaver, not cheap.

First thing I did to it was pull all the identification, liner and hat band out of it and throw it away, removed all the nylon thread, soaked it in a tube of warm water, took that silly looking Hickcock curl out of the brim, (not the pencil curl), and wore it while out mowing my pasture until it dried.

I'm going to modify it to look like the Texas Ranger hat in the infamous 1968 photo we've used so many times here on the NCOWS forum for a reference on hat strings. Should be pretty close to the original when finished....... has the same low shaped crown like the one in the photo.

Got some pretty nice old silver conchos that I am going to put on it, plus I've braided a smoked brained tanned buckskin hat string that I'm going to put on it, ...already punched the holes in the brim for it....I'll post some photos here when it's finished.

Tried to look at your "early hats" post from last year but the photos won't load...any chance you could repost?

What happened to your post??

Little Al,
You may want to do a search on "Stampede Strings", If it doesn't show up under that search...I wouldn't know how to find it!!

Mike,
When I buy a hat, I try to stay away from that TV cowboy mentality that you see so many in CAS emulate. The Hickcock hat had the basics of what I was looking for. I'll modify it to look like the hat in the photo.

When you go to a lot of SASS shoots like I have in the past you see more of one kind of hat then any other (I won't mention the name of the hat, but it looks real good on Robert Duvall). It's kinda like ALS (Assembly Line Shooting), I got real tired of the bang and clang crowd. Thats why I joined NCOWS.

NCOWS is more of what the real old west was about..... You know how it is when you do the 18th century thing, how strict we are...most people in SASS don't want anything to do with that aspect of the Old West.....You see a lot of Shepplers Cowboy Catolog in SASS.

Now with that said, I still get the urge to shoot a SASS match every once in a while (SASS # 2434)...What this does for me is enforces my reasoning of why I joined NCOWS.

Any guy who has a pair large enough to do that to a $200 ++ hat is a man of which NCOWS can be PROUD Grin! Sorta the antithesis of the guy who puts a plastic cover on his Resistol when the sky begins to darken. Just to create a stir at your next SASS shoot, step up to the drinking fountain and fill 'er up to the brim, take a long cool drink, and then ask if anyone else would like a taste - stand back in case the guy shooting the .38 special Ruger Bisleys gets a little apoplectic and tips over in your direction. Cheesy Cheesy

Bill,,iv already ruffled a few 'feathers' so to speak,,,,wont elaborate cept to say,,perhaps they can not understand the world were you and I come from....if they had done for as many years what we have,,,exacting to the 9th degree....and then adding to that on our own..perhaps understand would come easier.....

Mike,
Welcome to CAS City and NCOWS, if you've only ruffled a few feathers...consider yourself lucky.....Just to let you know there are more then just a few of us here in NCOWS that come from the hard core reenacting world...so, we're not by ourselves...

Fox,
Tim Allen was set up at the NSSA last year and I got to see some of his hats.....they are great and highly researched. I particularly like the Frank Hat....you can get it with or with out the telescope crown....but.....that Poague Hat is just awsome......

OCB - you crusty old harcdore..! Good deal on the hat, am keen to see it at Hooten. No, my good OCB, you are not alone and your post rings true: There are more hardcores out there than one might think...and all are welcome to visit at Hooten.

On that note, are you dining with us (Mr Hunt and I) at the National? Need to figure out how much chow to bring for the buffalo camp set up. So far it is Mr Hunt, Dr B and me. By the bye, I am off to Mr Hunt's Monday to do a try-out/set up of the camp at his spread. Will post a couple of pictures to the Association web site so you can get a preview of what to expect regarding the feeding situation and general look of our camp, stay tuned. Looking forward to your thoughts on it.

Monterrey,
What day are you and Jim planning on doing the camp? We've already paid for the banquet on Saturday night. If you are doing this on Friday...you can count me, my wife, son, daughter and son-in-law in on the feed and do we need to bring any thing to add to food entre's?

OCB - As we're deviating from your cool hat a bit, let's pick up the sundry & workaday stuff on the Association e-group site. Would be good for the other Association fellows to see it too for planning purposes.
