How Many people?

Fellow Cas shooters, Pretty obvious Cas is the fastest growing shooting sport in the world. I heard once that there may be as many as 100,000 people in the US and Canada doing this. Anybody heard the best estimates. Is it still growing at a rapid rate?

I believe current SASS membership stands at just under 65,000 but I'm sure there are pards out there thumbbustin' without actually joining the "organization".

Definitely more out there doing it without joining up.  I have a professional colleague who's a black powder shooter, but isn't interested in the group stuff.

Not sure that is true.  Badge numbers do not necessarly equate to active members.

  I had, based on my experience with another shooting org as member service director, I made the same statement on the SASSnet. From the replies, you'd have thought that I had poked somebodys Grandmas eye out.

SASS makes a point of not releasing actual membership numbers, just badge numbers issued. But there was hint to actual membership numbers released a year of so back....the number of Cowboy Chronicals mailed out every month.

Now, given that some households have multiple members but still only get one copy of the Chronical, I'd say a good rough guesstimate would be 30000 SASS members.

That's an interesting number, 27,000.  Cause last year, the CC was mailed out to 32,000.
So there may have been some serious erosion in the past year.

In the past, I would have said, double the CC numbers and that's how many shooters there are in CAS.  Now.. with some regularity, CAShooters join SASS their first year and then don't renew, but continue to shoot at the local level.

I believe sponsors of the various events get comp copies.  If you advertize in the CC you get one.  Add that in.

My best guess is between 20,000 and 25,000 members.  There are babies, mules and other two and fourlegged critters in that number.  I believe SASS has less than 20,000 active members in the USA.  The one thing that is NOT mentioned by SASS is the Life memberships.  Many Life members are no longer active.  SASS does enjoy touting their high numbers of badges issued.  It doesn't mean a thing.  I doubt many special presentation badges that SASS awards are active CAS shooters.  The New Mexico Governor is a SASS badge recipient.  What club is he in?  What does he shoot?  See what I mean?
