Homemade corkscrew
« on: December 26, 2006, 09:25:06 AM »
I was making some Italian Gravy from a Frugal Gourmet cookbook yesterday. It called fer a dry red wine. I was given a couple bottles of wine years old, since we don't drink alcohol the bottles were in the back of the cupboard. We couldn't seem to find a corkscrew. I got ta thinkin' what I could use to pull the cork. I tried a drill bit and cordless drill, but when I pull on the drill bit after it was in the cork it just pulled out of the cork. So, I got a 3.5" phillips head screw, screwed it in about an inch, and pulled on it with a pliers. Bingo! Bottle and cork separation. ;D So, if ya can't find a corkscrew ya might want ta try the above method.

I've used the same wunnerful tool as a bullet puller to get the ball out of a C&B.  As far as the wine cork, ya can ease a pocketknife blade deep into 'er and twist it out clockwise.  Counterclockwise works too.
