I would also second the recommendation for Art Burton's book, 'Black, Red, and Deadly'.

Actually, the Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, AND the Seminole had Lighthorse Police forces.  Unlike other nations (tribes), however, these Five Civilized Tribes, as they are called, were NOT on reservations.  After the Indian Removal Act of 1830, when they were moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), they actually went in as settlers, and established modern towns and communities......

If you wish to portray an Indian Policeman, I would first try to determine which particular tribe and location you wish to represent, and then try to SPECIFICALLY study that particular group.

If you are not going to be a full blood, then the Five Civilized Tribes would be a good way to go.......

Just picked up a copy of 'Indian Police and Judges' - William T. Hagan - ISBN 0-8032-7205-7.

From a quick overview - it goes into depth, and provides an excellent bibliography.

Vaya,

you can go into any Indian Casino in Oklahoma today and the place is being guarded by their tribes lighthorse police force.  I have a cousin that worked on the Cherokee light horse police force for 5 years

This thread just popped up on my computer.  I haven't read all 27 posts so if this is redundent, I appologize.

On page 186 of The Peacemakers, by R. L. Wilson, there is a photograph of a collection of badges.  One of them is a simple shield shape with Indian Police over and under U. S.

River Jiunction Trading offers a similar badge.

This website has a lot of information about Oklahoma and Indian territory lawmen including Judge Issac Parkers US Marshals, many of whom were Indian, and there is a link to Indian Police on it as well.

All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream. -- T.K. Whipple
