experiment with conical 36's
« on: October 03, 2004, 09:03:52 PM »
Got a Lee .36 conical mold and am going to try a little something different.  I put in a .358 size die in my 450 Lyman, set a boolit, lever'd it in just to where it had a small taper on the bottom.  Did about 150 of these.  Then changed out to the .375 die and ran them in all the way in to put lube on them and to size them all the way.  They just go into the cylinder 1/16".  It will be much easier to seat them  with the ram.  Will add a card wad betwix them and the 15 gr. of 3f that I will use.  Will report next Sun on the results.  Might be too much fuss'n, but will be fun.

Cactus,
That might make all the difference.  I gave up on conicals as they were so hard to seat right.  Found out most of them were key-holing at 50 feet.  Figured at that point there was a reason they call 'em "Cap & Ball" shooters and not "Cap & Conical" :D ;D

I, too, played with .36 conicals, those from Warren. But I found that the shape of the rammer cavity would not hold the point, it allowed the conicals to wallow around and jam in the chamber every which way but straight!

I've never even had a desire to try conicals in my .44s.

Tried them in 3 stages  30 rnds each pistol.  1st with 15 gr, 3f Ele.  did fine.  2nd with 15 gr 777 3f- too hot!  3rd with 18 gr. 3f Ele.  did fine.  Put in card wad betwix BP & pill.   They went right in with no problems.  Had no lube on them on the 3rd string, just put lube over the top & no problems.  1st & 2nd string they were sized/lubed with SPG & no lube on top.
Conclusion:  Ain't worth the hassle.    Will keep the ones I got & use them on occasion, but won't make any more.    Like was said b4--  C&B not C&C! ::)
