Hi SSS,

If you have any photos of individuals with their Spencer carbine or rifle from the Civil War or Indian War period, please post them here or send them to me as an Email attachment to  fsgrand2@fairpoint.net  and I will give you credit for the photo. It would be great if you could identify the individual and his military unit.

Please just post your Civil War or Indian War photo with Spencer, and any information you may have about the photo on this thread.

Thanks,

Two Flints

The inventor of the Spencer Firearm.

The Chickering Building located in Boston, Massachusetts at the corner of Tremont & Camden Streets became the only home of the Spencer Firearm Company from January 1862 to 1868.

Soldier on the left is Jeremiah Sullivan of Company L, 2nd Michigan Cavalry. Soldier on his right is not identified.

The first Medal of Honor awarded to a Buffalo Soldier was earned with Spencer Carbines.  The Painting shows Sergeant Emanuel Stance (2nd from the left with Sgt. stripes)), Company F, Ninth Cavalry, the first Buffalo Soldier to win the Medal of Honor "for gallantry and good behavior" because of his reliance and confidence in using his Spencer Carbine in several engagements against Mescalero Apaches in May of 1870.

Hello SSS,

Found these photos of Indian Scouts with Spencers and thought they would be a good addition to this thread.

Huston 1852,

Great photo and thanks for posting it.  May I ask you what source did you use?  Where did the photo come from?

Thanks for the contribution!

No problem, I'm sure with all these books scattered around I'll be able to dig up a few more.  This one is from "Echoes of Glory: Arms and Equipment of the Union"

Wow! Left-handed Spencers!  Billy The Kid would have loved to have one...to go with his left-handed Winchester '73!  ;D
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

Deadeye,

It may just be an Indian version of a monopod.

Hi Two Flints,   Just wanted to add a photo of my Great-Great Grandfather Yeah-Hau-Tan with what I think is his spencer carbine! He's the Kiowa warrior on the left hand side of this photo. The spencer is resting across the saddlehorn. It's real hard to see anything but the barrel and I think some of the other warriors are also carrying spencers. The photo was taken at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition and National Indian Congress 1898  Omaha Nebraska.  2 Hatchet

Emailed to me by SSS member 2 Hatchet:

Two Flints,

Here's that photo of Lone Wolf's son Tau-ankia (Sitting in the Saddle) holding a Spencer carbine in his lap. Looks like a Model 1865 with stabler cutoff. He was Killed in Texas during battle with 4th Cavalry 1873. This photo taken by W.S.Soule in 1872 at Fort Sill, Indian Territory. I just downloaded it from a Kansas Univ. website.  2 Hatchet

Here's another photo with my G.G. Grandfather Two Hatchet. He's just right of center in this photo 3/4 veiw. He's holding a carbine in his left hand and also his lance in the same hand. In this photo you can see the top of the receiver but still hard to tell if it's a Spencer or a Springfield. I'm starting to lean to Springfield though.

Hi Two Flints, Here's a little more info about the photo of Tau-ankia son of Lone Wolf.  Lone Wolf (Gui- Pago) became chief of the Kiowa tribe in 1866 when the Great Kiowa Chief Do-Hau-san (Little Bluff)died. Lone Wolfs son Tau-ankia was a favorite son of Lone Wolf. He and a nephew of Lone Wolfs Gui-Tain(Heart of a Young Wolf) were killed in a battle with Lt Hudson and some 4th Cav troops out Ft Clark Tx. My Great- Great Grandfather Two Hatchet was also in this battle.

 Hi SSS,
Here's a W.S. Soule photo of a group of Kiowa warriors. One is armed with a Spencer carbine. They are Poor Buffalo(center), Odl-kaun't-say-hah, Kaw-tom-te, Haun-goon-pau(Silver Horn),A'tah-ladte. These warriors fought in the Red River Indian War 1874-75. I'm related to Poor Buffalo and Silver Horn. This is a photo from Plains Indian Raiders by W.S. Nye.  2 Hatchet
