Title: Polish em up bright and show them off here!!! (pic posting thread)
Post by: Dakota Widowmaker on January 31, 2006, 09:29:54 AM
Folks,

Post your Henry photos here with pride. Please keep photos at a reasonable size. (like, around 400 pixels or smaller on the long side)

There are alot of nicely engraved models out there that have caught everyone's attention and show a great deal of pride.

These are wonderful rifles and fun to shoot.

These are photos of Bounty Bills engraved 1860 Henry. He couldn't figure out how to do it so I'm posting them for him.

Those look REAL fine...

How do you keep your brass from getting tarnished so fast? Is there a top level treatment, or, do you just wipe it down with oil ever so often?

I am REALLY thinking about getting my Henry engraved...

A good thing to use on your brass is SemiChrome Polish  (motorcycle shops carry it) I will take off all the tarnish and shine it up (it has jewelers rouge in it so will also take out small scratches.) works far better than brasso or flitz.

It is also great to do final polish on poly-ivory or even real ivory grips. I had my grips fitted but they were still rough and dull. I sat and watched tv and polished them til they now just glow, and are smooth as glass. (but as with ivory or good poly-ivory, they are not slippery when sweating and shooting...)

Thanks for sharing.

Seeing as how the tag line of this forum says "Improved Henry" rifles are also allowed, here's a pic of me shootin' my main CAS rifle - Uberti Model 1866 in .45 Colt.  I don't keep the brass shined up, though - don't want her glinting and flashing in the sun, giving my position away to the hostiles ....

Gee, Col. Riddles ... thanks for ruining it for the REST of us!!! ::) ;)  Seriously, you have GREAT reason to be proud of your rifle as does your friend.

Mine's more like RJ - an improved Henry that was shined last year.  I hadn't shined it in years - like RJ said, I didn't want to attract the hostiles - but when I took off the wonderful  Eye-tralian red stain and polyu. coating, it looked so purdy I had to shine it.

I'm not clever enough to post a picture.     YET!

My thats a mighty fine rifle ya'll got, it sure looks fine!  Hey Yankee Sgt, you know, we used that Rifle on our side too!  It was a great Cavalry Rifle for the Southern Army also.  You also did a very nice display.  Yankee Sgt, ya using black powder loads, or modern loads?

I prefer mine nice a Un-polished, 'cause if I'm waiting for someone/thing in the Underbrush or in a Tree or on top of a Hill, I don't wish to give away where I'm @ 'cause of it reflecting in the sun-light, nor do I like being Blinded myself by its reflecting capabilities while lining up my sights on my intended target.
Besides, I've Bled on her a time or 2 & it now has the Bronseish patina to her now.

No 'bangin' up here, just don't like being blinded. ;D :o :-*
Besides, I prefer the "Bronze" look she has better than a 'Brassy' look any day of the week.

Excuse the effort at photographic composition, been reading Packing Iron again. Leave the brass alone, else you won't get that pleasing mellow patina that is seen on all old Henry's. The stock appears a little more red than it actually is. Took that Italian red paint job off and used dark walnut stain. Looks much better now, if I just had the ability to grind down those Import and Italian stamps I'd be all set.

As a Propmaker, many a import proof mark & < Black Powder Only > script have fallen to my file.
Keep the file flat and work past the script to blend ,watch your edges.
Use 250 thru 600 wet dry paper to work out the final surface.

Reb Tyree: The little open top pistol is what collectors now refer to as a turned rd. barrel 61 Navy. Well I believe most shot .38 rimfire, this came from the factory in .38 LC. As you probably know these were made from 1874-75 with only about 2000 or so made per McDowell's book on conversions. I shoot it in NCOWS as pocket pistol occasionally after recv'ing permission as the barrel is 4 1/2 inch. But these originals were intended as "pocket" pistols. It is a nice little 5 shot shooter.

Major 231: Thanks for the information. I take it that the stampings are not so deep that it leaves a "divot" in the metal if you are careful. Just need the courage to take that first stroke I guess. I should have take metal shop in high school instead of that advanced biology course!

Heres a couple......The "66" on the left is an American Arms by Uberti I bought about eight years ago...I've never had a problem of any kind with that rifle, neither are short stroked.

The Henry is a Uberti imported by Cimarron. Is about two years old. Its the one I replaced the original front sight (after it fell out during a match somewhere)  with a 1861 Confederate half dollar.

The 1866 carbine is the one I used as a prop for the Chiricahua Apache painting I did for NCOWS.

I shoot nothing but 2f Goex Balck Powder in them as I do all my guns. I refinished and stained the wood on both guns to a darker american walnut, don't like the red color you see on most Uberti guns.

Galloway...
Most of us make our own cartridge box labels.

Bill, what did you use to remove the finish on the rifles?   When I did my 73 a few years ago I think I used a chemical stripper but I can't be sure. ???

Will,
I used a chemical stripper I purchased at Lowes. I can't remember the name, but it was the heaviest duty stripper I could find there. I used an assortment of cabinet scrapers to scrape the finish off.

Bear with me a bit.  Trinity is teaching me how to post pictures.

The first one is an "ivory" inlay on a '73 stock done by Russ N. Hound from a necklace I wear.

The second one is a brass "surface mount" on a '66 stock.  Russ did the bird as an experiment (I don't think he offers such a thing regularly, though.  Mighty pricey.  You'd have to check with him.) the "tacks" are brass nails with approximately 1/16 heads.  Not traditional or authentic, but I like it.

Here's mine....
Besides having a refinished stock, (without sanding or removing any wood) & (can't stand the blood red walnut they come with) it has about a $100.00 worth of solid head brass tacks...and a 1861 confederate half dollar as a front sight... I distressed the stock by leaving most of the dings in it, and added a few to give it a good used look....

Dusty,

You probably already know this...but do your research...the symbols, even the ones that were done with brass tacks have a meaning, and can tell a story...also the style of tack you use can date a firearm as to when it came into an Indian's ownership, or yours!!

Will,
Strippeze and burlap. the Strippeze you can get at Lowes or Menards...and the burlap bags at your local grain supply. I only took it down to the wood and didn't remove the original stain.

I used Fiebings Dark Brown Oil stain (the same stain I use on my saddles from Tandy's) and applied it over the original red stain. It will penetrate through the stained wood and gives a deep dark walnut color that I finished off with Jim Chambers original oil finish (available form Dixie's).

I don't like the alcohol based stains because they will leave a dull sheen in the finish & the oil stain will penetrate just as good.

Here's my little sawed-off runt, a Henry Special Short Carbine. I replaced the stock sight with a Marbles adjustable buckhorn unit. The man I bought it from is a pard who hangs out at my favorite toy store, got to chat with him about it today. He's upset I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Jeez, you know, some people just don't understand about life, they think shooting is life.  ;D

Here's an Allen Firearms Henry that I purchased new, back in the early to mid 1980's.  This is a very early Allen gun, so I recontoured the frame and buttplate to resemble the early Henry's in this same serial range.  I wipped off all Italian proofs, but left the Henry patent dates and the Santa Fe, New Mexico barrel marking.  In the late 1980's I had it engraved by a local gunsmith/engraver in an early Samuel J. Hoggson pattern and then antiqued the whole gun.  I've used it for many years and it just keeps getting better with age.

Adios,
Buck

Nice gun Buck, I like the way it looks aged , I think letting the brass age like this , is a much nicer look, than having it polished to a high gloss , and the engraving really puts the finishing touch to it .

Ten Wolves,

I don't know if you have read all of the posts on this thread, but if you did you know several of us like the aged look on our Henrys and Improved Henrys(1866).  And it is so easy to create.  I just have used real BP residue to age my Henry's receiver.  Used the same method on my Improved Henry.  On my first response to this thread I made the comment that with the dull patina it is "better to sneak up on the badguys with."

Buck,

I agree that is a nice rifle.  Ya dun good.

I have a lot of antique guns, but the Henry in the photo and a Shiloh Sharps are the only reproductions I own.  I wanted both guns to have the look and feel of the real thing, so I went for the antiqued look.  I went a little farther on the Henry than I did with the Shiloh, because I knew how nice the patina would look on the brass frame and buttplate.  I know some guys like the polished "new" look but none of the old timers sat by the fire or at the table in their shack and polished the brass on their Henrys and 1866 Winchesters.  This was especially true if you lived on the frontier.  There are several great looking "antique" Henry's on this thread.

Adios,
Buck

HOWDY PARDNERS WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN FLORIDA. I OWN THE BLACK BALLED BROKLYN MODEL HENRY.I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE BAD BLOOD BETWEEN THE ONE MADE HERE AND THE ONE IN EROUPE, YES I UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S A MODERN LOADING GATE AND MAYBE SOME OTHER THINGS. THE REVEIWERS OF THE GUNS SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT THE RUGER VACERO SO WHY SO AGAINST THEM BOTTOM LINE IF IT WORKS NOADAYS YOUR LUCKY EVEN IF IT'S A COLT, THEY ALL STILL HAVE PROBLOMS TO DEAL WITH ITS JUST HOW MUCH ARE WE TALKING PERSONALLY I WOULD NOT BUY A NEW GUN KNOWING THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PUT FROM 100-150 DOLLARS OR MORE TO GET THE RIFLES TO SHOOT. THAT SEEMS TO BE PURPOSLY DONE TO GET RIDE OF BAD INVENTORY. SOME WILL FIX THEM THEMSELVES AND OTHERS TRY TO GET RESULTS FROM THE DEALERS.IF YOU WENT OUT AND BOUGHT A NEW CAR AND WHEN YOU WENT TO TAKE IT HOME IT DIDNT WORK AND THE SAILS GUY SAYS OH YOU HAVE TO BUY A AFTERMARKET PEICE TO MAKE IT RUN ,WOULD YOU BUY THE NEW CAR? I DONT THINK SO ,SO WHY are so many people putting up with inferier carftmanship if thats what you call it.somebody needs to take a stand against all the gun companies and demand either a lower price to make the repairs to the new gun making it the  price as before.or recall them and put things right like a company that counts on reputation not sales and complaints. >:(

Henry 4440,
It's a .44-40.  This is the only caliber available in the early Allen Firearms Henry's.  Boy what a shooter.

louisc, many of us don't like that the company misrepresents it's self as a descendent of the original Henry company.

Also many of us are more than shooters but history nuts.  Your rifle is a perfect reproduction of a gun that never was.

They could have made a reproduction of many different historical rifles but chose to make this one. Then they added insult to injury and called it a "Henry" and imply it is like the original.   If you like it fine, to me it is clunky and ugly and the manufacturers are charlatans.

The manufacturers are not getting rid of bad inventory, all of their products are pretty much the same, and all can stand a little bit of tuning to perform at their best. Your analogy of a car that doesn't work properly right out of the showroom is not quite accurate. Most of these guns function reasonably well right out of the box. But in this sport some of us tend to run them to extremes. To paraphase a well known CAS gunsmith who used to drive race cars in an earlier life, taking a stock gun to a CAS match and shooting the dickens out of it week after week is a bit like taking the family sedan out on a race track. You will probably get away with it a time or two, but do it often enough and one day you will see the transmission sliding down the road behind you in your rear view mirror. Given ordinary use, most of these guns will function just fine. But they were never designed to be shot as often and as hard as many do in CAS. Many of the originals did not have more than a few boxes of ammo run through them in years. We tend to shoot our guns a lot in CAS, and some shoot them really hard. Just like the family sedan, which works fine for ordinary use, these very old designs usually need a little bit of fine tuning to put up with the abuse we tend to heap on them.

And I happen to share  Will Ketchum's opinion of the HRAC. If you take the time to read their advertising material, and if you know anything at all about the history of the real Henry rifle, you will see that HRAC's promotional material is full of half truths and self serving fiction. If they had chosen to build their guns and simply not come up with the fiction that they are somehow connected with the historical Henry rifle, I would have no quarrel with them at all. It is their dishonest approach to their marketing that continues to convince me I will never buy any of their products.

But I sincerly hope you are happy with your rifle and enjoy shooting it.

Well Pard, I don't know what to say except that I have a Uberti Henry, 66 and a 73.  I didn't pay anything near what you are quoting for any of them.  The only gunsmith work I have had done was to have the 66 altered to feed the 44 Russian.  It was 44 spl. when I bought.  I did have the 73 slicked up a bit but not by a gunsmith, just a friend of mine who did it for me.  Mostly these guns work fine right out of the box.  The only guns I have ever had when bought new were one of my Vaqueros had a part in the cross bolt, which holds the cylinder pin, put in wrong.  I had an authorized gunsmith fix it under warranty.  The both guns shot to the left and I sent them back to Ruger with a target and a couple of weeks later they came back shooting point of aim.

All European guns are fired for proof, but I don't think they are extensively function fired.

I hope this helps you some.

Howdy!

louisc - good to hear your opinion and reasons.  I'm not gonna belabor the point of "authenticity" or not, other than I favor it.  I also highly respect a modern company that chooses to actually produce and market a gun here in the good ol' US of A.  I'm of the same opinion as many here - it's not the HRAC GUN, it's the BS that the company tries to foist on the public.  As a matter of fact, I would LOVE to have one of the HRAC 22 lever rifles, because they apparently are outstanding!  I've heard as much bad as good about the Big Boy, and, the one I had in my hand at a gunstore LOOKED OK (looking at it as a shooter, not a replica) but was very rough and stiff in its action.  Stiffness will smooth out by firing as will some roughness, but this one was BAD.

Be that as it may, I'm not  gonna badmouth YOUR gun and you seem happy with it.  It's good to hear that and many of us are happy for you.

My reason for posting is this: I simply want you to realize that the VAST majority of these guns don't have to be "fixed" before they'll operate well.  Like you, I strongly feel that the damn thing should work out of the box!  Period.  Driftwood did say something about that, 'tho that you may have missed.  I'll bet 99% (more like 99.5%  ;) ) of the Italian and Brazilian guns sold here WILL work fine for the average buyer.  However, we CAS shooters are WAY above average!  You're a good example of that - 1500 rounds in just a few months!  I'll bet most guns sitting in folk's closets don't get shot that much in years - and that's WAY above what the average shooter did "back in the day."  It has been said by knowledgeable history buffs, that we'll shoot more in a typical Cowboy match than MOST did in their life!!!  While a good percentage of guns are sold to CAS shooters, more go to folks who simply like old style guns.  I can't back that up with facts, it's just my opinion - but I base it on gun sales as reported by companies like Ruger and my own experience as a sales person at a large Indianapolis gun store.  Furthermore, the Henrys, '66s, '73s and the newer '76 Winchester copies are relatively fragile - ESPECIALLY when compared to Ruger and modern Marlins and even the occasional Winchester 94.  The Brazilian copies of the '92 Wins. may be somewhat rough, but they're tough.  Why?  Because John Browning made them that way with new techniques and metallurgy geared toward smokey-less powder rounds!  (And because he was John Moses Browning.  'Nuff said.  ;D )  I have a '66 (Uberti) Winchester that is nearly 10 years old and has at LEAST 15,000 rounds 'thru it - and EVERY ONE of those rounds has been full power Black Powder loads OR, back about 5 years ago, I only shot smokeless rounds.  There's NO gunsmithing other than ME taking it apart and smoothing internal parts and I did replace the springs that bear on the lever.  I didn't HAVE to change them, but I opted to do it before trouble happened.

What too many folks do is buy their guns and immediately take 'em to get worked on.  Yes, a good job by a gunsmith WILL improve the life of the gun, because of the lack of hand fitting they have to do to keep prices down to a realistic level! ( ::) )  Too many shooters forget that 90% of successful, accurate shooting is the Shooter (because of PRACTICE) NOT the tricked-out gee-whiz $500 action work and parts replacements that were done (and they brag about to impress the rest  ::) ) ... as a substitute for puttin' lead downrange and good shooting techniques!!!!!

Most important - Have fun!  If ya ain't havin' fun, then whytheHellya wastin' time an' money?  Pick up a book an' read it - few of us do enough of THAT these days!  :D

Howdy louisc

No point going over the truthfulness of HRAC's advertising again, this is a board dedicated to the 1860 Model Henry and there is often not a lot of love lost here on HRAC.

I will stand by my earlier statement that most of the Italian guns do function out of the box. Whether they function at a level we demand in CAS is an entirely different matter. It gets back to the race car analogy.

All guns manufactured in Italy are required to be proof tested in government run proofhouses. Proof testing does not mean torture testing for function. It simply means can the gun fire a high pressure proof round without blowing up. Rigorously running the gun through its paces with a box full of ammo is a completely different situation. Believe me, if the manufacturers had to do that, the guns would cost more, simply because of the time involved. Here in the US the government does not require guns to be proof tested. Some manufacturers do, some don't. I don't know if HRAC does or not. Ruger does, it used to be common to buy a Vaquero with dirty chambers because after proof testing they did not bother to clean the chambers out.

A number of years ago I took a tour of the Remington plant in Ilion NY. I had a chance to watch some rifles being proof tested. Each rifle was secured in a special test stand that included a heavy steel hood wrapped around the gun to protect the operator in case something went wrong. The muzzle of the rifle projected into a separate room where the bullets were trapped. The operator mounted the gun on the test stand, loaded it with one round, closed the safety hood and then pulled the trigger. Then she opened up the hood, took out the rifle, filled out some paperwork, and started again with the next rifle. That was it, one proof round, no extensive working of the action or anything to be sure it fed properly. All manufacturers will take at least some time to be sure their guns function in the shop, that amount of time may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. But such testing seldom includes extensive firing.

I have owned several Italian made guns over the years. The first one was an Uberti made Cap & Ball revolver that I bought in 1968 when I was just a kid. Quality was very high in those days, and I could never complain about the quality of that gun. Years later I bought a used Cimarron Cattleman revolver, also made by Uberti. This one was a dog, one of the most poorly made guns I have ever owned. It had problems from the start, probably why the original owner got rid of it. I eventually got rid of it too. I have an Uberti made '73 that I also bought used. It was fine, except for a terrible trigger job that the original owner had done to it. I eventually had to replace the trigger and the hammer, but that was no fault of Uberti's, it was caused by the incompetent way the original owner performed a trigger job. My next Uberti gun was another Cattleman. This one was considerably better than the first one and I still have it. I bought a used Remington New Model 1858 Army a few years ago, and it is fine too. My Italian made Pedersoli Sharps is fine and so is my Uberti made Henry. I hasten to add that with some of these guns I have done, or had done, extra smithing to make them 'race ready', for CAS. But they functioned fine out of the box for 'normal' use.

As far as prices are concerned, I think you are looking at Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices, as specified on some of the importer's websites. You can usually do better than that. Of course you cannot buy these rifles yourself direct, you have to have a dealer order them for you. The dealer will probably get a dealer's price, but then he will mark it up to whatever he thinks is appropriate. It helps to deal with a large dealer who regularly stocks cowboy type guns.

I always suggest that folks watch the Dixie Gunworks website.

http://www.dixiegun.com/ (http://www.dixiegun.com/)

Check out their prices on long guns here. There is a second page too.

http://www.dixiegunworks.com/default.php?cPath=22_92_184&sort=2a&&page=1 (http://www.dixiegunworks.com/default.php?cPath=22_92_184&sort=2a&&page=1)

If you have a dealer order from Dixie for you he will have to pay the same price you see here. They have already discounted their prices and do not offer a further dealer discount.

Dixie also runs periodic sales on selected models. You can see a couple of them on these pages. I got a great deal on both my Henry and my Sharps when I bought them through Dixie a few years ago. Both the Sharps and the Henry were normally selling for around $1000 each. I got them for around $800 each. You will probably not see such deep discounts these days though, because of the declining value of the dollar against the euro.

Nice, Six Shot!

Keep up the good work.

The (real-life) ex-Cavalry Sergeant in me LIKES clean, shiny brass - I polished mine for several years after I got it.  Then I saw how many old guns had that nice patina, and I changed my tactics.  Besides, the glint can really attract unwanted attention from Baddies or Hostiles.  ::)

The sight of a well cared-for and highly polished Henry or '66 STILL looks pretty durn good to me ... but not authentic.  ;D

Actually, I was thinking that if you were going to be going after the bad guys, those rifles are just too shiny. ;D  The bad guys will see them miles away.  Of course they may be blinded by them too.  The shine really needs to be reduced and they really do like nice with a dull patina too. ::)

All joking aside, they do look really nice.  I gotta get me one of those steel frame Henries.

Guys and Gals,

Howdy again, y'all!

There's a couple schools of thought here.

For the first few years after I got my Improved Henry ('66) I kept that baby shined up and lookin' spiffy and new.  It was gorgeous.  Then I got into a period (that I'm STILL in) that likes the look of a well cared-for, but used rifle.  It's an authenticity thing.

Instead of me looking all squeaky-clean and new, I've gone to the "used" look.  Since my persona is that of a retired Cavalry 1st Sergeant, circa 1885 or so, my rifle would look more like a well maintained rifle that I bought new, "back then."

BUT ... the (real-life) ex Platoon Sergeant hiding in my skin still hates to see brass that isn't polished to Inspection-level brightness!

Ah well.  Yer mileage may vary.

I s'pose if this is the worst that happens to me today, I'll be in pretty good shape! ::) ;)

Thanks Seth.  Found the blue one on the SASS classified a few years back.  Navy Arms has the blue ones listed at $1247.00. (ouch!)  Dixie lists only the case colored ones for $950.00.  That's  a huge price difference!  If I had a case colored one, I'd be mighty tempted to antique it.  But that's all I need is another Henry. (grin).   BTW.  I like the engraving done to your Henry. That's something to be proud of.  Did you take the picture?  If so, care to share some info on camera used and settings.  Also tips on lighting.  The picture really looks professional, and of magazine quality.

I finally got a few pictures of my Henrys.  The first is in 44-40 for use as a black powder rifle.  The original owner stripped the stock and bluing to antique it.  The pictures do not do it justice.  In person, it looks like an original.  Has had a Cody Conhager action job.  Stock is finished in oil.

The second is the "military" model in 45LC.  I bought this one used as well and it is as new.  Sling came with it.  It also has an action job by CC.  Some people do not like the shiny finish on the stock.  This one has beautiful wood and I am going to leave it alone.

Both shoot like a dream.

Thanks for letting me share.

The bottom Rifle is imported by "Cimmaron Arms", costing about $1500.00

the top is a home built, (modern) "Volcanic".

I do not build these for sell.

Maybe some day.

I also have a Navy Arms .45 Colt Henry.  It may be my favorite rifle to shoot.  I like how the Henry is so visceral and the .45 rounds are so slow you hear the strike noticeably later than the report.  Boom! pause Whap!
and it handles Schofield ammo as well
Boom! longer pause Whap!

I too would love to have a Volcanic.

Let me know if you decide to make them for sale as well.

Hey Guys,

I enjoy hearing you like these Volcanics (almost) as much as I.

I say almost because I have spent many thousands of hours to have them.

Research, Design, Machining, then fitting them together and hoping they work.

Even yet, I spend several hundred hours building one of them.  and then there's the Cartridge they shoot, I have to make them also.

It is not possable for this action (Toggle Link) to shuffle and shuck any available cartridge today except the 22 Short.

So, this special cartridge turns off the regular gun manufactures.

You Guys who really want this gun,
I want you to have it, -
but, I spend over 300 hours building one of them. Would you spend 3 to 350 hours of your time to have one?

I do this for the love of the Gun, and the challenge, not the money.

You stand a better chance of me giving you one, than hireing me to build one.

This Gun can be built for the same cost as a "Henry", for those already set up to do it. But it needs that Special Cartridge.
(Let those who build "Henry's" take note)

For you who would really like to own this Gun, I would like to see it happen.
I would like to see it happen for the love of the "Volcanic", I don't need the money.

If you ever shot this gun a few times, you would not want another Cartridge.
You would agree, this Cartridge, and this Volcanic, goes together.

I am Charlie, search for me and the Volcanic on the internet.

Oh my! Now that is dedication to ones hobby. If only everyone were as passionate as you must be. It is terribly unfortunate that these are not being produced for public purchase, as the videos you have made and the build thread and subsequent forum posts all point towards a very marketable/profitable item.

Thoughts:

I'd be real happy to have one in .22 short or anything.

What's particular about your cartridge and the .22 short working?  Short overall length?

Why not franchise the whole project to Uberti (or someone else)?

I'm OK with that.

I am trying.

I just have not met the right Folks yet.
I'm talking about someone who actually builds and not just talks about it.

2 things I hope happens here on these forums;
(1) To show it can be done.
(2) to generate interest in the Volcanics.

Then someone serious may come along and this beautiful little Gun (Pistol + Rifle) will be available.

It might require another party.

Hypothetically for example, Uberti says they will tool up and build it if N units are guaranteed sold.
Maybe they'll take some retail risk but not all required.

Then Navy Arms (or Cimarron or Taylor or Lew Horton or Lipsey's) gets interested, guarantees the N orders, and then it could happen.

That little rifle (farther above) is absolutely gorgeous...

Unfortunately, due to my financial state, even if I wanted to hire you to build one, I couldn't.  But I can still dream, and a dream I've had for a long time would be to have enough cash to hire a gunsmith for the making of a scratch-built gun, something unique.  And so far, this it the most unique scratch-built gun I've ever seen... fantastic workmanship evident even in the photos.  Shame I can't handle it, to see how it feels.  With the smaller proportions, it should be lighter and much more handy than the "full-size" Henry.

I believe I read it in another thread, but am I right that you use shortened .40 S&W brass?  While I also agree with kcub that the .22 Short would make a fine chambering, I've also been wondering about a .32 Auto version, but I don't know if the length would fit.  Though I have been thinking a .32 ACP wadcutter would be fun, handloaded, of course.  Perhaps even (properly sized) round ball in a .32 ACP case, with some nice BP behind it?  Perfect little squirrel gun, I could imagine.

But I do like the .40 Volcanic you've created for it.  It does indeed look like a fine gun/cartridge combination.  I'm not one for "magnums", myself.  I prefer accuracy over raw power.  Just enough for the given job.  And for this rifle/cartridge combo, I see the perfect ranch gun, suitable for small-game, pests (ferel cats/dogs, rabid raccoons, etc.), and perhaps even the puting down of livestock.

Having a Volcanic rifle/pistol combo would be fantastic.

Very true, Sgt. John.  Reloading is the ONLY way I can shoot.  I have guns that have never had a factory round go 'thru 'em, but have shot thousands of rounds.

Of course, I have a couple that have fired tens of thousands (and more) from and ALL were factory.

I'd love to, but I bought that ammo for an Uberti Remington 1890, so I could get out and shoot.  Cheaper to buy a box than all the reloading gear.  Ended up trading that gun off for a Winchester Model 61, before I even got a chance to fire a single round out of the 1890.  Couldn't pass up the opportunity to own a nice, classic rimfire rifle, after having sold off all my past rimfires.  Ended up trading another gun for a Colt Woodsman Sport, first series.  So now I have a classic Colt/Winchester pistol/rifle combo... worth the sacrifice.

Not the best picture, but here is mine, with some extras.

Henry is with a elk leather fringed case with beaded nose.  I made it trying to capture Ethan's sheath from "The Searchers"
Below it is a Winchester 94, it is with an Apache inspired Case.  Case was made for one of those pretend Henrys, they are the same size as the Win 94, so I used my 94 as the base.  It is brain tanned deer with trade wool lining and trade wool inserts. Seam is sewn with buffalo leg sinew, beads are done with linen.   It was a lesson in patience for me.   Beneath that is just and odd-ball brass remington with shoulder stock.  That case was made from scrap, but didn't turn out too bad.

The Chaparral 73's Charter Arms imported in 07 or so had a faux finished mystery wood....

13 rounds in the tube on these 17.5" barreled guns using .45 C. Special brass and a set screw in the lifter.
More historically correct with a 200gr .45 bullet doing 1200fps  than a 45 Colt by a long shot :-)  And best of all they run like goose grease on fire when required.

OK Gabe - looks like I gotta put some rds downrange with my Henry this year, starting with the 'Chilako Trials' event at your club.

Please tell me that we're not going to be shooting them at wash tub sized targets at 10m .....

Sorry I can't polish my 1860 because it is the iron frame model. Converted to .45 CA Special ( .45 short) it is a hard hitter and super fun to shoot. Fully loaded 17 rounds is that an ancient assault rifle?

Loaded as it was originally intended.  Mine is as well.   Hell of a lot more historically accurate than a Henry n 44-40 or .45 Colt.  Good on ya.

My wife bought this Henry from Henry Repeating Arms, for one of my Christmas presents.  It's a quality rifle.  Wood to metal is excellent!

Here's two of my all time favorite rifles.   My 1860 Henry in 44-40 made by Henry Repeating Arms.  And my 1874 Sharps Hartford in 45-70, made by C. Sharps Arms.   Both fun shooters!

Winchester Miroku 1866

No polish on this one and in fact I like the mustard looking patina better.

I have always liked the lever action rifles of the old west. I have avoided the Henrys and 1866's as you can't find ammunition to shoot in them, I did finally find both original guns. I bought the 1866 SRC and it is a late model centerfire rifle and seems to be very scarce in a factory centerfire. The henry, I am still waiting on a price to see if I can get it too...
