Mornin Y'all, going to be low to mid 70's and sunny here going up to 80 tomorrow. Rain Thursday then sunny and mid 70's for about 10 days or so. Hoping it dries out enough to mow the lawns that are greening up.

It is all ready 82 here - lawn needs mowed again here.

I have been down at shed cutting wood for wifes craft projects and a new chicken roost. My o2 started running low.  I think westerns are next on agenda.

My photo bucket locked me out, so i am unable to post from my phone. I planted blueberries 3 summers back. I dumped a bunch of manure on them in the winter. They have their first fruits this year and loaded pretty nicely. I am happy...

Afternoon all.

65 and sunny today.  Got some fluffy clouds up in the high country, but they're blowing out.

In a while I'm going to grab my dog and a gold pan and see if I can't strike it rich in a creek out of town.  It hasn't worked yet, but there's still time.  ::)

After my coffees this am I had a productive day. Mowed the one and a half acre worth of weeds down, loaded some of my 2 inch 12ga shells, checked 20 or so of said 2 inchers in my Model 12 Trenchgun on my platerail. I decided to increase my load to 1 oz from 7/8 oz in these, lack of any choke in a cut sg barrel really opens the pattern so a few more #9 pellets can't hurt. Tomorrow I want to cut and face my Krag Scout bbl and hit the stock with some Truoil and see how that looks.
Been cutting roses off the Mrs rose bushes for her, she likes them alot. We're still trying to get her back to baseline since her fall and rehab. Slow going. Have a better day all.

Long time, no chat. I hope all has been good for y'all. As for me, I have mostly been slacking, mostly due to pain. The local Tractor Supply is having a Farmer's Market type deal, and they asked me to show my leather work. Nice to be asked, but, I am wondering how that will work, since I only do stuff on order. Of course, all that is secondary, since the Missus is going in for more cancer screenings. If it is cancer, at least it seems to be in the early stages. I told her it wasn't a competition, just because I had cancer... but you know a woman always has to try and one up a man.

Oh, and the weather has been fairly mild and dry, currently sunny and clear.

She is somewhat better after if antibiotic s and oxy, is getting a bronchioscope as I type to collect samples for culture and see if they can tell wtf the mass is since Cray and cat scan inconclusive. And of course they say "can't rule out cancer without a biopsy". And I reply "without data you can't rule out that it isnt a moth!  ... Evening all.

Hit 75 today.  Currently 62 at 20:00.

The dog has officially reached retriever territory.  Took her out for a walk today at the end of a forest road, and on the way out we ran across a big old gray squirrel.  I happened to have the 22 in the truck, so I let her out, grabbed the gun and got that tree rat.  Dog picked it up and brought it over (she was expecting a game of fetch).  Then during the processing, she made sure the whole thing was thoroughly sniffed.   She got the head and heart for her trouble.  The rest is currently on the grill.

Yep, but put one in a half pint of cheap Vodka and let it steep a month and it's a good bargain for extract.

Walmart Great Value extract is the real good stuff and inexpensive.  Watkins with a different label.

Well the night before last i learned they used Vodka to make it. Last year i bought a couple beans and thought they were missed priced... yesterday i was watching a cooking show and she was showing off her extract. 22 beans and in her words 1 and 1/2 bottles if good vodka in a jar sealed like you said for a month or so.  Pound of beans is over $400.  This must be the gold standard in Madagascar.  The specks in Ice Cream must be fake

Afternoon all.

Did SAR training today.  Man tracking and orienteering, then went to the Lieutenant's house and had tacos.

When I make vanilla extract, I'll do a quart at a time, and I use three beans and Jim Beam White Label bourbon.  I think it comes out better than with vodka or white rum.   I also chop the beans pretty finely.

Several years ago Rita's Aunt gave me a sad old butcher knife.  Had a pine handle on it held on with machine screws and nuts.

Marked Weck & Muller Soligen Germany the steel as expected seemed very good.  Was a half tang but length, just not full width.

Well I removed the old handle (scales seems the wrong word.) and it was a mess, the tang was very rusty and pitted and it got set aside for another day.  That day came recent, filled the pits with JB Weld and sanded it smooth so the epoxy didn't need to bridge a gap.

Dug in my wood stash and chose a piece of Old World walnut.  Inlet the tang in on side and epoxied it in place.  Trued everything up and put the other side in place.  Annealed brass rod for the rivets, sanded the wood after final shaping.  Used 2 stains and some of my tricks to really bring the grain out and then the many coats of hand rubbed linseed oil.

I know have a new camp butcher knife, my wife has kinda laid claim to my nice old Sheffield one because camp season and watermelon season over lap.

Couple years ago I had a message in the evening upset because she had to use the smaller butcher knife for a melon.

Depending on what source i use, it was either 88 or 90 today.

Finally made the plunge and got new traction wear for my Jeep, (Liberty) will be mounted and balanced installed in the morning. I got a little over 90k off the current threads. They were 60k mile types.  The jeep turned 200k miles last month.  It has done everything i needed and been everywhere i needed to go.  I would not reccomend one, however this one has served me.

High here was 90, with a smattering of rain, sun, hail, thunder.  Also, at one point several thousand winged ants fell from the sky, and I still don't know why.

Took the dog out to the lake today, let her swim around for a few minutes, then we went and climbed up a mountain for a while.  We made it up to about 5000 feet, from the trailhead at 2500.

For dinner we had grilled chicken.

Burned some 12 gauge ammo as well.  Helped a friend pattern some new buckshot for home defense.  Rio #4 buckshot was impressive:  $2 for 5.  21 pellets at 1350fps.  Recoil was about the same as birdshot.

I'll throw some food on Friday the night crew.

It got to 85 today.  I took the dog to a pond to celebrate.

I went out to record a new YouTube video, then climbed a mountain.  That later part was kind of impromptu.  I went to the end of the drivable road, then followed past where the forest service tank trapped the road.  Ended up climbing 4000 feet, buti got to the top.

Afternoon all.

Currently 80, supposed to reach 95.  Possibly in for some rain and lightening to kick off the official start of fire season.  The atmospheric pressure is down almost a half inch from standard, so it could happen.

Got some corn in the ground yesterday and day before.  I have one patch of Inca Rainbow, and another of Salia Parching Corn.  Both are supposed to grow well here, so we'll see. I'm thinking I might plant another patch of either corn or sunflower, but I haven't decided for sure.

60 and rainy today.  Had a pretty impressive thunderstorm yesterday.  They had to close down one if the roads in the county because hail was floating in rain runoff and had piled up almost three feet deep in one spot.  Pretty consistent 40mph winds through the whole storm.  Now we're just stuck with rain.

On today's agenda is helping some acquaintances move.  The joys of being the guy with a full size truck.  I've got about two cords of wood and a sofa to move.  Yay.

Thanks Major, Major, Rooster, Slim, et al ....

Mrs Marvel is comfortable at home, walking, talking, sleeping, eating, and watching Nat'l Geographic Channel - the healing continues!

------------
Now that I am back on a confusicator with a real keyboard I can more easily wax eloquent at the drop of a chappeua chataeu hat.

on an earlier note,  I had an amusing experience last friday, whilst mrs marvel was stable and well-watched over in ICU, I left the horspital
for an hour to shop at wally world to get a few snacks she could eat ( oddly they have some organic gluten free stuff, like quality applesauce in single serving containers)  and a mattress pad for myself  ( the hospital was very accomodating, and let me stay overnight and sleep on a fold-out chair-bed, but the mattress was a bit thin for my back).

At any rate, after parking about 200 yards from the entrance, I heard a woman yell
"help me he stole my purse",
and I percieved a young man running hellbent for leather in my direction chased by 2 or 3 other young men. .....

The perp yelled "outa my way" at a middle-age feller .... who complied......

something just clicked in my head .... ( ie: not in my town!) .... apparently I loudly yelled "stop thief" several times( according to others)
and without thinking at all I ran full on towards said perp....

Perp yelled "I got a gun man!" .....
and I bellowed ( so loud they heard it all over the parking lot) "SO DO I F***ER".

Perp did a 180, back towards the store ... and previous pursuers.
I bellowed STOP HIM while chasing....
and about 5-8 more men started converging from all over the parking lot.

At this point it began looking like an action-comedy.
Two 20-somethings ( one had a man-bun) jumped in one of those Kia mini-clown vans and took up the chase.
Three Really BIG guys made it to their pickups, grabbed their pistols and took up the chase, one driving his pickup.

I saw The Kia caught up with the perp and more guys were arriving.
I was winded and some distance off but they had the Perp hemmed in.
Words were exchanged.
Perp threw the purse the ground and trotted off before the BIG GUYS could get there.

Since none of us were LEO, having no powers of arrest, etc, and not trained in taking down a street guy probably armed with knives,
we decided "good enough" and purse was returned to Nice Lady.

Nobody hurt, but everybody was, well, rather "excited" ....
oddly in this day of youtube, no one thought to get photos or video of the perp.

take-aways:   Good Guys 1 Bad Guys 0

1) Nice Lady was unharmed, had all her stuff.
2) Nice Lady was advised to report incident, and to carry purse with strap "cross chest" instead of over shoulder.

III) I love this town and the people in it. we take care of each other.

d) Prof Marvel still has a REALLY big mouth.
e) Prof Marvel can still do the 100 yard dash.
f) Prof Marvel better make use of the "free gym" thingy in the health care plan - need more cardio vascular and leg and upper body, etc...
f) Prof marvel is signing up for CCW classes and acquiring permit and "carry insurance"
..... cuz "it" was locked in the car ( full disclosure to perps not req'd)

Ah My Good netizens -

Thanks for the coffee!

It's good to be home.
Home made coffee is so much better than Hospital Brew,

Mrs marvel & I are both sleeping well and even after all this and still recovering, she is now "head and shoulders"
better than even 2 months ago. An abcess and several liters of pus & crap in the pulmonary cavity does not do anyone any good!

------------------

Thanks for the kind words, I think I am no more a hero than the other 10-12 guys that participated,
especially the ones that confronted the perp.

The Prof is Just a crazy motivated guy with a big mouth in the right place at the right time... and a good bluff....
... timing is everything...
and having a kevlar insert in one's shopping bag gives one more "tools" !

I got these for us a while ago:

if one is on a budget they can get this for under $30, seal it with paint or varnish or epoxy, and make their own colorful cover:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/BALLISTIC-SHIELD-Body-Armor-Bullet-Proof-Level-II-2-11-5-x14-STOPS-357-MAG/331578622492 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/BALLISTIC-SHIELD-Body-Armor-Bullet-Proof-Level-II-2-11-5-x14-STOPS-357-MAG/331578622492)

Shoot, one can cover it in leather, or even make a clipboard out of it!

..........

Ah yes, I loved Wilford Brimely in Crossfire Trail. And he did well in "The Boys of Twighlight" as the deputy sherrif of a quiet mountain town. At one point he is interviewing a yuppie murder suspect as the yuppie is shooting trap and trying to look like a scary guy.... Wilford finally gets pissed and blows the next clay bird out the sky with his service pistol....

omg. imdb says the series was one season long in 1992... how time flies....

Off topic,
In the last several years I've lost muscle mass due to sendetary sedimentary lack of exercise, and it is long past time to
hit the gym and address that, as I am only 64 and have no excuse.

But due to that, my prior "goto" carry pieces - the combat commander and Dan Wesson Mod 15 are a tad too heavy for EDC
(my pants will fall down!), and I am now considering an ultra-light J-frame or plastic single stack 9.

Prof, I will put in a vote for a scandium J frame lightweight revolver. That's my edc. It only holds 5 .38s but mine is cut for moonclips so it's a relatively fast reload. I don't plan on getting in a ncisla style gunfight. Put it in a pocket holster and forget it's there. I guarantee that it won't pull your pants down. With the crazy looking Ergo grips and Hornady Critical Defense ammo it's not hard to shoot.

And all those action heroes that we grew up with are getting pretty long in the tooth or worse. Well, at least you can drive by the gym.

Ah My Dear Ed -
that is really the direction I think I am heading.
ultra-light, laser sight, funky ugly compact rubber  grips. fluff & buff, make the trigger match my stainless jframe.
probably the buffalo bore soft lead snub-nose load. get the same grips for my heavier stainless jframe.
then  I can practice with the heavy one and finish with a dozen or so rounds out of the ultralite.

the way my eyes changed, the lasers really help - trolls around here seem to have a serious change of heart
when they see the red flash and the little dot appears on their tummy, chest, or forehead ...  :-X

dry as a bone out here and scary fire season weather.
the Marvels are considering some more landscape rock and sedum close to the house.
I already bought half a dozen jugs of sprayable fire retardent.

Professor Super Marvel, I just upgraded my carry gun to an S&W M&P Shield 9mm. Just bought it yesterday. Will give a range report after trying it out, probably tomorrow. Was using a Ruger LCP in a pocket holster. Little Elsie Pea is tiny, flat, easy to conceal.....and hard to shoot, although changing the recoil spring to a 13lb one helped. With concentration, it's plenty accurate, but trying to shoot fast, it squirms around in the hand a lot. Considered the Ruger LC-9s or SR9c, but the Smith just felt better in my hand, and I liked the feel of the trigger better than the "flippy thingy scissor trigger" of the Ruger.

Evening all.

I am well and truly sun burnt.  Seven hours in top of a hill looking west sans hat will do that.  But, I was shooting, so that that.  Took out a few rifles and a couple pistols and burned about $200 of assorted 308, 223/5.56, 9mm, 380acp and 20 gauge.  Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
I just want to brag for a minute here.  I was hitting a piece of letter paper consistently at 230 yards with my Beretta 9mm pistol off hand.  Ok, bragging done.

I'll add a vote for the S&W shield.  My dad has one and it's a pretty nice gun as far as "combat Tupperware" goes.  The Glock 43 is not too bad either.   Walther PPKs are nice, too. My mom has a Bersa Fire Storm, which is a PPK clone made with an aluminum frame: it's only about three ounces heavier than a a j-frame
But holds 8 rounds of 380acp.  Never had a hiccup, even with Lehigh Extreme Penetrators.

Just how much is that shindig across the pond costing the British taxpayers? For sure her father taint paying for it. The British Royals are nothing more than a tourist draw but I feel for the British taxpayer.

Missed the nupials but did help Mrs Roo get her farmers market booth set up. Sold out of eggs thru the week, this week. She sold some muffin breads (local peaches and strawberries) and other items this week. She reports.

So a spot of the good old come sit on the Veranda, sweet tea for me this morning.

No range report on the Shield yet-several bouts of thunderstorms today, power out for most of the afternoon.

Perfessor Super Marvel, the S&W Shield comes either with or without a manual safety (required for some states). Mine has none, just the "trigger safety", and a somewhat long trigger pull. S&W uses a sort of hinged trigger, instead of the Glock style scissor trigger most of the other striker fired guns have. The S&W and Rugers that have a manual safety, have one that operates like a 1911, although it's somewhat smaller. Frame mounted, and down is off. The "Backwards" safeties are the ones on DA/SA autos, mounted on the slide, which are "up is off", like the Smith 39/59 series, Ruger P-series, Beretta M-9, etc.

Supposedly the shindig across the pond yesterday cost somebody $45,000,000. Mostly for security. The Diana wedding cost $110,000,000. That's a lot of tea.
Rain all week, next Saturday we do our WB match. The range is going to be a mud hole I'm afraid. As long as it's not raining. Good coffee drinking weather.

Prof, I will put in a vote for a scandium J frame lightweight revolver. That's my edc. It only holds 5 .38s but mine is cut for moonclips so it's a relatively fast reload.

I agree, I have one and it goes everywhere with me. I did change out the tiny rubber grips it came with for these Boot grips, gives me a much better hold on the gum.

After a sunny afternoon, another toad strangler blew through, while we were in church. Some construction behind the gym seems to have interfered with the drainage, we got about an inch of water in side one corner of the gym and in the storage room. Took 7 of us about 45 minutes to get most of the water swept/mopped/squeegeed out the back door.

For those of you on the Ark waiting for landfall. Try loading glue stick and primer ammo. You can shoot it in the house. You might wait till the Mrs. is out of the house though. They won’t cycle a slide but still fun to shoot.  You can use the glue stick slugs over and over depending on what your target surface is. I used a towel draped over a cardboard box.

Got to pick up feed and gas for mower.

Not been on here in a while.  I just ready Prof M's post on the Justice League.  Funny, I didn't hear anything about that in the news (sarcasm intended).
As for CCW with 1911 type controls, I have two.  Though I don't CC them...they are in the vehicle (re-evaluating this practice as your story, and recent events close to home, Santa Fe HS shooting, have prompted.)  Both guns have thumb safeties, but no grip safety.  I, or rather my favorite wife, owns a Sig P238.  It is an awesome little gun.  Though some may frown on the 380 ACP, the gun is very light, easily concealed and very  easily managed while shooting.  Miss Red can shot it with one hand.  I keep a Taurus PT111 in the Jeep.  I've added a set of Tru-Glo sights to it which cost 1/2 again as much as the gun and two mags cost me, but they are great in low light.  The PT111 isn't the most accurate gun, but I've not had any reliability issues with it.

The Sig runs in the $600 range, and comes with night sights.  They also make a similar, but only slightly larger version, 938, in 9mm in the same price range.  The Taurus was $250, plus another $120 for the sights I added.  I chose the Taurus for the price range....Heaven forbid it is stolen, but I won't be out of a lot of money (of course, snub-nosed 38's are available in the same price range, too!).

Stay calm and carry on....

Good Morning to y'all. Been kinda rainy or overcast, with bits of Sun peeking out on occasion. Been up into the 90's, which means we are running the genny during the day now, so the wife can sleep. Her cancer scare turned out ok. They had found microcalcifications, which are usually a precursor to breast cancer. She got the biopsy, and they proved to be nothing, and were removed. However, while they were doing that, they also found a 2mm cancer, but it isn't going anywhere or amount to anything.

But, prior to the biopsy, we had been sitting in the garden, and she said she wasn't feeling good. Next thing I know, she pitches forward and face plants on the ground. I called 911 (Which is a real joke here), and she was unresponsive off and on for about half an hour while we waited for the ambulance. They finally showed up, and took her to the local hospital... which is usually a death sentence. They discovered she had a few strings of pvcs, which lead to her dropping out., She's doing better now, but has to wear a heart monitor for 30 days to see what is going on. Hopefully they can control it with meds, and not have to put in a pacemaker. I tell you, that scared the crap out of me.

My best wishes go out to your wives, I hope they are doing fine. Take this opportunity to let them know you love them, because there is no telling what tomorrow will bring.

I'll stir the coals for the night crew.

We've been having some weird weather in California the past few days.  It knocked out our internet for the better part of four days.  We got somewhere around four inches of rain, with lightening everyday.  Of course it also had to be 90 degrees.

My grandma and some other family friends will be arriving tomorrow to attend festivities for my younger sister, who is graduating high school Friday.  So if you don't hear from me for a few days, it's because I'm hiding in the forest with my phone turned off.

I made a comment the other day about not only the people are going crazy but that the planet inself was going crazy too but I forgot to add that the wildlife is losing it too. There was a mountain lion attack on a bicyclist the other day and I just saw where a coyote attacked a girl in nc. Luckily her father rescued her. Not to mention the craziness inside the beltway.

Just started on my first cup, a pretty sunrise. A rough night for the ms= a rough night for me. Up and down from 4:00 on.

Was in the low 90's here today, but no A/C installed yet. Did fix the kitchen window so it would open, though. Been stuck for about 5 years, since I painted the window sashes. ::) With an exhaust fan in the window, and ceiling fans going, it's not too bad in the house-yet. At least not by my standards, anyway. But then I spent the afternoon mowing, hilling 120' row of taters, tilling, and cleaning weeds around the fruit trees. At 90+ degrees. Maybe I'm not the best judge of "too hot". Also set up some hog panels in a big "V" layout with a box trap in the center-hoping to catch the Armor-digger that's been excavating the back yard.

Evening all.

We hit 90 today, and skipped out on rain for two days in a row.

I took the dog for a walk around 1500, then we drove around in the backwoods for a while.  I immediately regretted that when I stopped by the gas station.  $3.89/gal right now.  I put $30 in just to put 5 gallons in the back tank ( up to a quarter tank, from empty) and two up front (I only had $30, so that finished it off).

I've been offered a  40S&W Hi Power by an acquaintance for $450.  Another friend was interested in buying my Ruger 5.56 for $475.  I'll get back to you all in this deal, but I may be getting a Hi Power next week.

Fly if one is available, don't have one, not really wanting the extra weight.

He said he does not list them on the website because he has few orders for them ...maybe 3 orders a year  :-\

.313 is what I requested.

Del.  I had a client that wanted a old wagom in their product display....

if you look closely, you'll see the wagon is acctully a large Two-Dimensional ( not full scale though) printed graphic on 1/2 gatorboard
the Tarp over is however fabric to give some depth.....

The trade show is over , but the tarp may still be around....its yours if you can use it ...

Probably 8 ' X 8'   :-\

Cost more to send it than to buy a new one.  Thanks though.  We have placed of shade to eat.  At the muster though around noon I swear we take turns in each other's shadows.

All show ...little blow and a little rain ...justa bit yesterday 10:30 to around noon....stayed gray & breezy through this morning
but not a nickels worth of rain overnight.

That's about it , ' coruse we are 275 miles East of the thing's center and it was sucking a lot of dry air which disrupted it .
It may have altered many folks planned BBQ's etc.... I had none myself,  so I just watced the race..."Danica" haters were not disapointed  :-\  and messed around looking @ Krag parts ...

TK, Browning has stopped making the Hi-Power, That price is a steal, I would grab it. You can get a .357 Sig barrel for it and get much better performance from it. Just make sure he isn't confusing Hi-Power with Hi Point, big difference in prices... ;D ;D

I wasn’t sure you could get a Hi Power in .40sw... however Hi Point you can. For $450 you can buy 2 new Hi Points...don’t knock ‘em till you try ‘em.  Big and ugly but short of a nuclear bomb you can’t hurt one.

Danica is finally gone the good ole boys will no longer have her to hate.

Yes, they made the Hi-Power in .40 short and weak, They're not as desirable as the 9mm, but they're still one of the best handling pistols ever made. Look for the prices on them to start climbing in the future.

Hehehe short n weak...

I don’t know if i’d put this on my wish list. I surely would not kick it out of the cabinet though, and i’d really like to shoot it.

Had a pretty good size Cherry tree blow over. Fortunately none of the goats or neighbors sheep can get to it. We don’t have cattle so it is a matter of cutting it up.

Then while feeding neighbor had a big lop come out of a big oak next to his place

It hasn't rained here in a few days. ::)

Afternoon all.

Sunny and 80 right now.  The NOAA is calling for 96.  My sunflowers and gourds like that.  Me, not so much.

Well, that Hi Power sold out from under me.  Someone offered him more than asking price, and I couldn't sell that rifle in time.  I'm probably still going to sell to rifle, because Sportsman's Warehouse is having a sale on RIA 1911 GIs.  I've been drooling over 1911s ever since I sold mine, and if I'm going to have some extra gun money from the rifle then why not.  I'm thinking 38 Super this time, so I can toss a 9mm barrel in for practice.  I don't know.  So many guns, so little money.

Afternoon all.

62 and cloudy.  Atmospheric pressure is down a quarter inch, and it looks like the hills around town are getting rain.  Probably heading this way.

I think I'm going to do some dishes, then work on some reading.
