Title: Coated bullets in 32/20
Post by: bear tooth billy on February 05, 2018, 06:27:07 PM
I have an original Winchester 92 in 32/20. I've used it at a couple of cowboy matches and usually of 10 rounds
it has a couple that kind of hang up. I've tried seating the bullets at different depths with out any difference.
I am thinking of trying some coated bullets, will I need to lube them if I'm using APP.   Thanks

No lube needed for APP.

Thanks, the bullets that I have are RNFP  but are .225''  across the flat front, the coated look
more rounded, so hopefully will feed better and still be safe in the tubular magazine.

I've shot the coated in the 32wcf, and the 38wcf with 2 f Olde Eynsford, and not had any problems running thru 10 rounds.

With APP you might try moly coating on your cast bullets.

Pretty well covered, but to condense, no matter the bullet, with APP no lube is needed nor recommended.

Are you sure that you don't have a gunsmithing issue and not an ammo problem?

Coated bullets = an ingenious solution to a non-existent problem.

There is an article on doing it in a current reloading magazine and it seems to be a lot of trouble for little gain.

Are all head stamps the same ? Are all case lengths the same? Are all crimps the same? Had a similar problem years  ago with a 32-20. Had mixed headstamps, about 5 different ones. All "cartridge" OAL's were correct, but because of the different headstamps they were crimped in different places. I found out that each brand had a different "case" length. Trimmed them all to the shortest case length ,,, no more problems. Just something to check.
Good luck

I loaded up some bullets with the new coated bullets and loaded up 10 and went outside
to see how they cycled. They went through just as fast as I could cycle them, no hiccups
at all. This was all new Winchester brass, I do have some Starline also, I will have to try
it. These bullet fronts are more rounded  and about .015'' smaller across the flat.

I went out and shot 35 rounds through the 92. When I really went fast I had 2 stand straight up and jam.
A young lady shot several through it, slower and it worked fine. when I went slower it worked fine. it's like when
you really lever it the weight of the bullet comes up too far. Is there a problem that can be fixed or am I expecting
too much out of this 111 year old gun?   Thanks

Check the rails for clearance.  With my 92s I had to shim the right side rail about 5 thousandths.  Usually stovepiping comes from slack in the feed rails and it's easily curable.  Mike the distance between the rails and mike the rim size.  If there's too much slack you will get a  stovepiping jam.

Someone more well acquainted with the 92s will chime in here perhaps.

Dick pretty much has it ---but most fellers are more familiar with the 44/40 & 38/40 where its the clearance between the rear portion of the feed rails that does it .... on a 32/20 there two little tit thingys - nipple lookin little bits stickingout off the feed rails that stop stovepiping - also two coresponding grooves in the ejector housing bit on bottom of the bolt to clear these projections as the bolt cycles - I put a picture down below - if that little bump on each feed rail wears some - or I have seen where somebody retrieving an old gun has polished the feed rails and taken them clear off - those two little bits of metal is all that stops the small case 92's from stovepiping - this old gun of mine is a bit untidy externally but in pretty good shape inside - I can fill the magazine, hold it upside down, and run it fast or slow, and it feeds good --- so Dicks shimming the rail should get you out of trouble - just watch that you still have clearance for the bolt to run free -- if those little projections are gone completely -----I did put one back right years ago with a dob of weld on each rail then filed it back to shape -- dont know if I could do that now - eyes are not as good as then.  Look at the tip of the pointer in the picture will tell ya what it should look like.  If your gun is worn it will probably work better with fired casees unsized than it does with new brass?   Hope some of this helps

Thanks Greyhawk, those bumps are definitely there. I measured across the feed rails and came up
with.360" and .310" on those little bumps. So they are sticking up .025'', so I have no idea if that
is worn to much or in spec.  Thanks

The case where it matters measures about .345" so it SHOULD be ok .....its not tho so somethin needs attention.
I cant measure mine accurately but the boolit passes ok   .309 and the neck of the case will not pass .322

There is a host of different size and shaped boolits that have been put together for 32/20
I just measures a winchester factory round at 1.562 OAL -- I have some cast reloads that are 1.610 (different shaped projectile crimped in the groove) Got another mold off a friend that is shorter - they all feed - but maybe a longer OAL would work for ya ? Worth a try with two or three dummy rounds?
Or try Dicks shim suggestion .. ya can take the right hand side feed rail out (and get it back in) without dismantling the gun - cut a piece of bean can to fit and see what happens ? ... costs nuthin ....wont take very long ........

I took it apart last night, to look over the internals and give it a good cleaning
(who knows the last time that was done).  I have some .005'' shim stock and i'm
going to put a piece under the right side.
