Title: WTS/T some guns.
Post by: smoke on October 24, 2017, 08:36:27 PM
I have a few things to move.  I probably need the cash but I might do a bit of trading.

1.  British Magazine Lee Enfield mk 1.  AKA "Long Lee"  This is the model that preceded the SMLE.  This is an antique made in 1897 by LSA...London Small Arms.  A some what more rare maker.  This one is not military marked so was probably made for a civilian shooting club that was popular in England at the time.  It has been used long and hard.  Maybe it was pressed into service in the Boer War and stayed in SA after that or was captured?  No idea but it has seen service.  A really cool rifle but I have another one that I like a bit better.  It is complete except for cleaning rod and dust cover.  I have seen reference to a Boer War era order removing hte cleaning rod.  No idea on bolt/dust cover.

$700

2.  I have 2 Webley's for sale but I only plan ot sell one.  So first one to sell.

#1.  A 1916 dated version.  Good matte finish, CUT cylinder :'( but other wise a nice gun.  The back strap is marked RTC and some numbers...Royal Tank Corps?  Sold out of service markings.   Strong markings.

$475

#2.  A 1918 dated gun...blued finish with some wear and sadly a bit of pitting.   The blue finish is mottled...some is bright and some is dull.  This gun is un cut and has not out of service markings.  All the other markings are very strong.

$675

Shipping will be extra.

PM or email for pics.  I will take some tomorrow with the wife's phone but I cannot get them to load on my computer ot post here.  I can only email them.

Trades.

Trapdoor Springfield..a decent shooter grade.  Maybe one of the old H&R carbines.

Krag, a decent shooter grade rifle or a cut down that was restored as a carbine of Philippine Constabulary carbine.

An old Cimmaron arms  Cavalry Colt or a stainless Ruger NMV in .45 Colt... 43/4 barrel preferred.

Anything you want ot know, shoot me an email or a pm.

Thanks!

I can perhaps add a bit of information regarding the "Long Lee" rifle you have for sale ...

Firstly, for clarification it is not actually a "No. 1" rifle ... that designation is properly applicable only the the "Rifle, Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield" (AKA S.M.L.E.) which was introduced in 1903 ... and only came about with a change in terminology in 1926, at which time it was decided to re-designate the S.M.L.E. (then still the primary-issue British military rifle) as the "Rifle No. 1".  The earlier "Long Lees" continued to be referred to as Magazine Lee-Metford and Magazine Lee-Enfield rifles ...

For what it may be worth, I do have a spare dust cover for the bolt (fully functional, although definitely not pristine ... which sounds like it would match the condition of the rifle) if any purchaser might be interested.

I can confirm that most surviving examples of these rifles (as well as the single-shot .303 Martini-Metford and Martini-Enfield rifles and carbines) will be lacking the cleaning rod because of the directive you have mentioned, which abolished cleaning rods for all .303 caliber rifles and carbines, and directed their removal from weapons already fitted with them:

RJ....of course you are correct.  I was thinking about how it was marked and had a brain fart....do they have those in Canada?

I need to fix the post.  It is a MLE mark 1.  I will try to get a pic up shortly of the markings.   It is marked like this.

                                     L.S.A. Co. LD
                                            L E
                                              I

Yes, brain farts are an all too common occurrance North of the Medicine Line ... many of them are suffered by me, on a regular basis, I must acknowledge!  :-\

The inclusion of the Rifle designation and its Mark in the stamping (... on the right side of the wrist socket, I assume? ...) implies to me that it might have been made for commercial sale for use by a member of a Volunteer military unit, who equipped themselves rather than being issued arms, etc. by H.M. Government.  Such commercial-production rifles intended for civilian use solely in "service rifle" shooting competitions did not have to be marked that way (although they did have to comply to the approved patterns.)

My own Magazine Lee-Enfield target rifle ... also L.S.A. production by the way ... is marked only with the manufacturers name:

It is a Mark I*, by the way ... produced after the directive abolishing rods in existing rifles and eliminating any provision for them in rifles manufactured thereafter .... so it has no rod hole in the forward-projecting bayonet lug ...
