Title: I have a 44 Sp 73 uberti and I am going to
Post by: Mike on September 08, 2017, 12:09:34 AM
I have a 44 Sp 73 uberti and I am going too get it re-chambered to 44WCF, why! I shoot BP and want too have a dedicated 100yd Gong lever gun, My 66 is shooting in the 80+/100 at 50yds so don"t want to use this for the gong.
Should be a easy conversion Yes? ;D

I don't think you can rechamber .44 spcl to 44wcf unless you put a liner in the chamber.  I'm thinking the neck would have to be too far forward.  Not positive, thouigh, and I have nothing available at the moment to measure.

Since there are a lot more 44wcf rifles around than 44 spcl, I wonder if you might find someone who wants to trade?

Whatever you do, good luck!

On second thought, you could also rebarrel the rifle (that is the only change needed) and then sell your original barrel.

Hi, I have done a quick look and think if it had been 44 mag know way could it work. No barrels available here and no one wants the 44sp here either.
Need to use the gun.

If ya do it (just run a 44/40 chamber in) - gonna end up with a little step in the neck of ur cases  44special neck is 12 thou fatter than 44/40 - so a bit over half way along the neck you will have that 12 thou step - body of 44/40 will clean out either 44 special or 44 magnum easy enough, its the neck thickness that gets ya - other way of doin it is set the barrel back a couple threads (or three or four whatever it takes to cut the chamber clean) then you trim magazine tube and forend wood back the same amount - its less than 3/16th inch - some fiddling but dont need to buy a barrel .

Rowdy .....living in the USA I would do that too ---- downunder we have very limited options - that changeover would cost me 200bucks in fees and charges ..IF .. I could find some dude wanted to swap (unlikely) Mike is a Kiwi by the looks of it so probably travelling a similar track ..

I have a friend would do the barrel work for free for me, has the 44/40 reamer, I would do the bit of woodwork and shorten magazine tube myself - the rifle is gonna end up 3/16th inch shorter - we get out of it for a few cups of coffee and some time spent in the workshop.

I wonder is there a bit of a fad going round on this changeover? Green mountain is outta stock on 44/40 tapered octagonal barrels?

Sell it is the easy bit, getting a new gun a bit harder, only one dealer and I wont buy another gun from them. Also this gun is set up how I want it. Will get it done, the mag and wood work is so miner to do.
Thanks
