Title: 50 round drum malfunction
Post by: wildman1 on December 18, 2016, 09:43:32 AM
I have a 50 round drum that will get a round canted sideways sometimes and not feed. Any Ideas? My 30 round stick mag works fine. 50 round drum is new.

Load the drum with FMJ rounds and see if that solves the problem.  My drum works well with jacketed rounds but jams up every time with lead bullets.

Those were FMJ  rounds, col 1.2".
They are jamming in the drum, I can lock the bolt back and use a small screwdriver to straighten it and it will do fine for a few more rounds then same thing happens. I'm wondering if there are sharp edges or something that is catching the brass.

Having used them in a M1928A1 in Vietnam, I found them to be visually intimidating and "cool" but about as reliable as a ten cent watch.

I got rid of them and went to thirty round box mags instead.

I tried to use mine at the World Championships this year. I got off about 3 or 4 rounds on the first stage before it jammed. Then had a hell of a time getting it out of the receiver. I doubt I'll ever use it again in competition. (Or likely anywhere else for that matter)  :(

It's my belief that someone who had a hand in buying military wares, or was a congress critter, had a brother-in-law who wangled a contract to make them and therefore they got distributed.

You'll notice that the M-1 /M-1A1 Thompsons only accepted the double stacked box mags.

Looks to me like some sharp edges may be the culprit, might as well smooth em out. Worse that can happen is the mag still won't work right.

Well I took the diamond files to the finger things that push the cartridges around. The point that contacts the case had a lip on it from the stamping process that would catch on the case rim as it was pushed out. Some were worse than others. Three of them were so bad that I had to reach in with a screwdriver and push it out of the way before I could get the cartridge out of the drum. After smoothing them a little none of the cartridges caught. Next to the range to test it.

I've got a drum for mine and it seems to work as it should. I also have a Suomi with 2 drums and one of those works the not so much. The one thing that the Thompson drum and the soumi have in common is it takes a while to load them. Stick mags load fast the drums other than looking very cool they take awhile to load.  ;D hey they are heavy..........wait is that good or bad? :o  Dusty Boddams

"Oh, Czech Bad, how are you? You stupid old dog food taster you! I was not a corn farmer, I was a pig!

I took a good Czech, she is good because her Czech cabbage and dumplings are better than her mom was. Anyway, she says she may be right in my bullet may be too great. Grin

Her dad taught me some Czech so I thought I'd try it here with you, but much of what he taught me, I can not say here
"

BAH!  The tings you say!  Of course woman with good cabbage and dumplings like big bullet.  I say, go find chicken what scratch little marks all over your letters!  HA!

And bullets STILL too big!

You see? I told you my Czech wasn't too good. I meant to say "silly" not "stupid"  And I may have forgotten to use a word or two, but Cathy's sauerkraut and dumplings is still better than her mom's was.

But now those other word Julius taught me (the ones I can't use here) I learned them well as I heard them often.

I know two shooters who use the Drum exclusively in AZSA matches.  These are their thoughts on possible problems that may cause malfunctions:

Being wound incorrectly.

A dent in the drum.

A defect in the pinwheel.

I also know that they both wind the drum springs more than what Auto Ordnance recommends and claim they have better luck with them that way.

I've been giving it 9 clicks, guess I'll try 11. The round doesn't go sideways as long as there is another one beside it.

There might something to be said about how tight you wind the drum. I tried shooting with the drum full with 50 rounds. I wound it according to auto ordinance instructions. First 25 rounds went off with out a hiccup! The 26 round jammed. The spring felt like it was unwound. I wound it up about 15 times and the rest shot with out a problem. The drum is cool looking, but I see where it can be a pain in any kind of serious shooting.
