Me and a friend were talking the other day, we got to wondering. What's the closest old west caliber (ones they had back then) to a 357 Mag?

Use this as a model.

A 148 gr RB from a .44 Colt Dragoon is the ballistic equivalent of a .38 Spl. Plus P load.

A conical out of a .44 Walker ruled the roost until the advent of the .357 magnum.

It was easily eclipsed by the .44 Mag due to the 240 gr bullet weight.

If you're talking kinetic energy or power, then yes, the Walker load or a .45 Colt.

 If you're talking similarity of size/shape/caliber (IE what would look most like a .357 Mag), then the .38 Long Colt that dates back to 1875 is a predecessor of the .357. It was stretched out and given an inside lubed bullet of slightly narrower diameter to become the .38 Special in the early 1900s, which was stretched out again to become the .357Mag in the 1930s.
