Title: fixed/adjustable revolver sights - which categories?
Post by: TheOtherLeft on July 14, 2013, 10:10:05 PM
Hiya all,

I am new to CAS and have been to a few matches to observe and ask questions.

One thing that I found new was that adjustable sighted revolvers (eg Ruger Blackhawk) are now allowed across all categories (maybe except for B Western) whereas before only fixed sighted revolvers (eg Ruger Vaquero) could be used across all categories. Something to do with modern vs traditional being withdrawn.

Can someone please confirm this as I was ready to buy two Ruger New Vaqueros in 38/357 but may get the Blackhawks instead.

Thanks.

You are correct, there is no longer a modern category for the adjustable sights.  You can use them in all of the age based categories and many of the other categories.

Howdy, Aged Based and B-Western OK.
Duelist, Gunfighter, Frontier Cartridge (BP), Frontiersman and Classic Cowboy NO.
The fixed sight Vaquaros will get into any of the categories except cap & ball. There is also a litle know twist in the rules that will allow adjustable sights in the Duelist category, but only if you are a Senior. All this and more can be found at the SASS Rules site. Good Luck :)
SASS Rules (http://www.sassnet.com/Shooters-Handbook-001A.php)

OK thanks for that.

What were the categories before the rule change? I've only gotten interested in CAS this year so only know about the 2013 rules. Was there a traditional/modern class for all of the categories?

The categories have changed continuously over the years so the phrase "before the rule change" really doesn't say much.  In the "good old days" there were two categories, men and women.  Now there are over 30.
