I am looking for a close-up picture of the SAA Steve McQueen used in the Mag 7. The one I am referring to appears to have an inlay on the right grip panel around the grip screw. There was a pic of one that was said to be used by McQueen in the movie that went up for aucton awhile back. I can't find it and it did not have the inlay. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Found the article in the Winter 2011 issue of GOTOW. It was a basic Colt SAA BP frame with mixed numbers, one piece grips that was sold in 2009. It did state that it was one of two used by McQueen in the Mag 7 movie.

That was pretty interesting. I am looking for more specifics on the primary gun used by McQueen. It appears to have a nickle or silver backstrap and trigger guard with two-piece custom grips. Any help is appreciated.

Take the DVD and go frame-by-frame until you can see it clearly.
Guns used in films came from places like Stembridge and the other prop houses of the time - they were reblued and plastic grips from 'Franzite' abounded, and they were used by many more actors than one would think.
What 'you' see as plating may just be blue wear on the backstrap.

It was on this past weekend.There's a pretty good view in a couple of scenes of the grips.Looks more like an oversized screw escucheon than an inlay.

I was under the impression, that back in the old days, some of these actors used their own guns in some of the movies they appeared in. I have read several articles about Stembridge Rentals over the years too. Many of their guns went up for aucton only a couple of years ago.

Stembridge and most of those studios who still stocked weaponry sold out a quite a few years ago.
Sold the gunleather, as well - and the saddlery and rolling stock and Indian regalia and militaria.
For years, one could find studio-marked original equipment, but those years have past long ago.
A few actors used their own firearms - the writer Jack Lewis used to touch on some of that, in his articles on past Hollywood stars.

I was just fishing around to see if anyone knew if Steve Mcqueen used his own gun in the picture. If, so perhaps its still in the family and pics of it might be floating around. Thanks for the feedback.

I watched the movie again this weekend. After freezing the frame, I noticed McQueen's gun appeared to have a brass trigger guard and backstrap. Up until the reproductions were introduced, I didn't think these existed in the 1960.

Brass grip frames didn't exist till the repros came along. It could have been painted, a lot of guns wore paint for the movies, specially 92's without the forearm.
