Title: "Prize" holster
Post by: Trap on August 14, 2010, 06:51:11 PM
Got the new holster from John Saffran that I was lucky enough to win at the Natl, shoot. Once I finally figured out what I wanted it only took a couple of weeks and is a great holster and fits the gun made for perfectly. I would recommend him if you need a holster.  Thanks John.

How about showing us a picture of it?

While I haven't seen the specific holster Trap mentions, I've had the pleasure of shooting with John S. (Johnny McCrae) and have seen his leather many times.  It's outstanding!

John helped me in a prototype idea I had...it's not old west not even CAS.
It is a CCW idea that was in the back of my mind.

John not only saw my vision but perfected it...he worked up a working example ,sent it to me , we critiqued it.
and he build the final product....

He is trully a pard to ride with ...THANKS JOHN !

Howdy Pards,

Just got back from my annual motorcycle trip out west this afternoon. Many thanks for the kind words. I'm proud of this one so here is a picture. It is a fully lined Mexican Loop Holster with a wide skirt. It has been dyed with home brewed Walnut dye followed by a hand oiled finish. Fortunately a friend had the specific pistol for me to use so sizing and wet molding it was easy.

Johnny, which one is that?  The one for Trap or The Major?

Will,

This is the one for Trap. I forgot to take pictures of the one for the Major. Old age I guess.

Here it tiz..... The idea was a belt pouch that mimicked a tool pouch or meter case.

It completely conceals the Mod 36 S&W in the pocket style leather holster inside. There is enough retention in that holster so the Smith is snug.
The holster is secured with 3 screws to hold it in the upright position. No rattling or movement and at the ready.

John took my verbal description & sketch and turned it in to this exact example of what I was envisioning....
Not only that, but he did a earlier prototype fitted to a K frame he owns and sent it to me , we critique it, improved & adjusted it to smaller size for this final product for my J frame.

The finish is Skidmore's and he even sent me sample tub of the leather cream....

John is a super guy....this is not the first time he's shown me great kindness, some years ago he shared 4 hides of some really cool
pebble grain Leather, from Motorcycle shop that had closed.. He gifted the 4 hides to me...I've used it for holsters

Beautiful pouch Major 2, Johnny and I have been friends for some time now, and your right, he goes the extra mile to make folks happy with there leather, but besides that , he's just a great pard through and through one to ride the trail with and never have to look back. The gun you made from Johnny's hides looks great too Major, nice work pard.

                      Thanks for honoring my friend

Here is a photo John sent of the early prototype mockup, the K Frame is his Wifes.
It shows the wet molded case cover and the molding block.

The holster set I made were for lady mounted shooter , the silver plate buckle set was salvaged from an old belt found at Goodwill

Major & Johnny, I really like the J-fram holster.  I wouldn't mind having one for mine.  I might think about having a mini mag loop and perhaps Leatherman sheath on either side to make it appear to be more like a tool pouch.

Considered that ( loops & Sheath) even though about a place inside for a speed loader.
In the end I was still most interested in it being compact with no snags etc.
