Arizona Trooper (aka Tony Beck) checking in. At the moment I shoot three Spencers, a CW rifle (56-56), an M-1867 rifle and a New Model carbine (both 56-50). I also have a 56-56 Ballard rifle with a CF conversion and a few of them new fangled Whitney-Kennedys and Winchesters. I'm an N-SSA shooter and aim to try SASS. (Need a good double shotgun and would love to find a Whitney). Is there an exception for Spencer pump shotguns? They don't have an exposed hammer, but were ahead of the Wincheser 93/97s by over 10 years.

Two Flints,

To be honest I can not remember where or who I first heard it from, but I did talk to someone at Taylors about 3 - 4 weeks ago and they said that a rifle version would be available this spring or summer. Calibers  are .56-50 and .44-40.

I hope that what I have been told is correct. If anyone can find out anymore indepth information I would be glad to know myself.

                                                                                                                  John.

Captain John,

The reason I ask is about two months ago I sent Tammy Loy (Boss Person at Taylors) an Email asking her if Taylors would ever consider importing a Spencer rifle from Italy to go with their carbine.  She never got back to me, which is why I jumped to respond to your comments about a rifle.  I think I read somewhere, too, that Armi Sport was already working on a rifle design, but can't remember where I saw the information.

I own a early Spencer (First of the Carbines received by the Govt in Oct. 63) and it was converted to 50 cal.  I shoot it all the time in N-SSA events.  I would love to see if I can find more information about this Spencer.  Is there any place I can have the s/n traced to see if I can be connected to any unit from either the Civil War or the Indian Wars.  I am also interested in know what the rest of you who shoot the 50 cal cartridge use to load your rounds?  I am thinking of working up a longer range cartridge that would reach out 100yd-200 yds (Maybe using Swiss Powder)..  Any suggestiong would be welcomed

Larry reporting, (aka Cav Trooper). Served with 2nd ACR in Nurnberg, Germany 67/68, 71st AHC Americal ChuLai S. VietNam 69. Own an unmolested 1860 56-56 Spencer without the cutoff, bore not bad for an old boy, slugs to .535". I have converted to centerfire from S&S and have reloaded and shot 50 rds through it. I need help with reloading questions about the cases, Rapine healed bullets and Rapine hollow base bullets and crimping. I'm using FFg Goex at 35 and 40 gr. with home made SPG lube. This rifle is going to be fun as soon as I can work the bugs out of loading. Also looking for less expensive cases, I bought turned brass at $2.00 a pop, ouch! Any info and help would be much appreciated. I've read everything I could find and listened to everyone so far and need to sort it all out and get the skinny from fellers who shoot these beauties.

Thanks,

Howdy all;Thought it was time I joined. Just got my 56-50 Spencer from taylors. Cant believe I've had it for about two weeks & haven't fired it yet. Anyway the"fondle factor" is quite high on this rifle. I have long been facinated by the Spencer design and finally decided that at 68 years old my 45-70s were kicking me more than they used to.(how does that work?) So I sold one for the Spencer.
I got brass, dies & bullets from Buffalo Arms. Seems like a good outfit. Found out my Dillon won't work,so now I will have to see if I can snivel & whine enough to get back at least temporarily the other loading gear I gave away last year, knowing I wouldn't need it any more. Story of my life.
Anyway, glad to be on board. I look forward to swapping experiences with a very knowledgable bunch.

Howdy, Y'all!
Guess it's about time I join the Society, seein' as I was the first cowboy action shooter in Scandinavia to use a Spencer as a mainmatch gun.
Got my ArmiSport carbine in .45 S&W from Hege Arms Company in Germany,  and am developing a cravin' for a rifle in 56-50 caliber that gets worse by the hour!   And yepp; I gave Snapshot the Spencer-bug!  :)

I remain,

Well Boys, reckon I'm number 80. The Texas Highlander here, SASS 39806. Just took possession today of a very gently used Taylor's .44 Russian carbine that I hope to get loaded for and break in this weekend. I will be shooting "on the dark side" matched up with a pair of Pietta's .44 Colt cap and balls and an original 16 Ga W. Richards double.

Post by: Bead Swinger on July 25, 2006, 10:25:56 AM
Hi all -
I'm very new to this forum, but glad to find Spencer shooters out there.
I own a 56-56 rifle in the 22,000 serial range, that after many years I am just getting back to shooting.
I use a Rapine flat-nosed, heeled bullet that weighs in at 379 +/-2 gr., and use both 50-70 cases and some of the new starline 56-60 brass.

To fire it I have an S&S Firearms centerfire block, and a replacement tube.  For safety, I filed down the follower in the tube so that it is flat-nosed like the bullets.

I recently tried some Trail Boss - 9 gr. loads and clocked in at around 1000 fps. - which seemed quite safe for the old girl. The 50-70 cases came in slightly higher, and the longer 56-50 cases came in slightly lower, and with more variation.  If I can find the right tools, I'll probably cut down the 56-50s, after I figure out how to modify them to extract properly.

Thanks!  'Looking forward to trading notes.

'Frenchie' LaFrance, glad to be here. I'm going to chew through all these posts and learn all I can from them.

I don't have a Spencer yet, but I've been reenacting the 3rd US Infantry (1860-1865) for 11 years now and want to expand that up to 1872 for my NCOWS and GAF impressions. I want a .56-50 Spencer rifle, not a carbine. It turns out the Spencer rifle is good for the post-War 3rd Infantry and also for doing Civil War US Navy! I mean, is that cool, or what?

Good to have you Frenchie, I have wanted a Spencer Rifle since the dorn of time! But living in my part of the world waiting for hot firearms is normal!  Ce La Vie...  Finaly, it seems like I am going to get my Spencer this fall.  I am working on my Blackeslee six tube cartridge box in the meantime.! Just got hold of some nice brass tubing to use in it, yes I know they are suposed to be tin, but the brass is nicer and the size/fit is exelent!

Guess this is where I check in. Nowonder_1999, no affiliation, just got an old 1865, and got it talking again. Need some pointers on bullet design. I have a couple of molds, and have loaded a couple of hundred rounds. Shot 20 with startling results:
1) Gun didn't blow up
2) 50 yards averaged better than a 9 for a 20 shot group.
3) Gun didn't blow up
4) Starline brass worked fine
5) gun didn't blow up

and did I mention; the gun didn't blow up?

Have a 44 Russian carbine is inbound. Initially was looking for a rifle, but after researching, found entire regiments of infantry used the carbine, plus private purchase would allow it also.

Not too much of a story here, contacted a few sutlers only one I found that had any on hand was a 44 Russian. My preference would have been 44-40, but didn't want to wait.

Hey,

add my name to the list.  I ordered a rifle in 56-50 from Taylors back in June with a buddy following me a few days later by ordering a carbine in 56-50.  Of course, his carbine showed up a week later with my rifle remaining on backorder until late in August.  Oh well.  I apprecitate the imformation I've learned reading the posts here over the last few months.  Between live rounds and blanks, I have to have put at least 600 rounds through mine already.

Hi,

I'd like to be apart of the Spencer Shooting Society.  I am not sure how to do that.  I am not an active in CSA activities, but the activities of CAS interest me, and I've inherited a Bannerman Spencer Repeating Shotgun from my Grandfather. Using Google Alerts, I became aware of the CAS site, and saw that some documentation on Spencer Shotguns was listed here (I haven't figured out how to view those documents yet).

The story behind my grandfather's Spencer is that it was supposedly the first repeating shotgun seen by the border guard of Dakota territory (at what is now Yankton, SD) to enter Dakota territory.  However, my Mother, still alive, will not support that claim, as she thought Grandpa was sometimes enthusastic with the truth.

The gun's action cycles, but because of the damascs barrel I wouldn't shoot it.  It is in good condition for something built about a hundred years ago.

So is there a specific action I need to do to be a member of the Spencer part of this group?

Thank you.

Howard Warriner

Two Flints,
I just purchased a Spencer carbine in 56-50 back at the N-SSA Spring National, I was really looking for one in 45 LC but
found one being offered at 1/2 the going price. At that point the 56-50 look very good. I just got my brass and
dies and been reading the posts here to get my background info on loads. I would like to join the SSS and hope to get back into the Cowboy game at some point. Currently I do Civil War Cavarly living history and plan to use my Spencer for live fire events. I have found some good starting loads for both black and smokeless and once the heat wave out here in CA passes I will aneal my brass.
Thanks to all for some great info and insights into 56-50.

I am the very proud new owner of a Spencer in 45 Scofield.  It is a wonderfull shooter and a tack driver.  I shot mine this past weekend at the California State SASS match.  It was fun to listen to all of the questions form the more traditional lever action guys.  And yes, it helped out that the string of shots was only 8.

I would like to join this group of Spencer aficionados.

I joined CAS about 3 weeks ago and began reading all 45 pages of this forum. I used the name Chromebolt (the name I use on a machinegun forum), but rejoined yesterday when I couldn't figure out how to change my name. I use Shenandoah on a flintlock forum. Shenandoah is more fitting.  ;D

I learned much about Spencers from the previous readings. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

I have a Taylors in .44 Russian. Hopefully by Christmas, I'll have one in 50 cal.

Hello all. I am new here and found the site doing research on a gun I just got as a gift.

I was just given a 1863 Spencer Carbine Serial#27361 (in full working order) and am trying to find out about the rifle and any possible parts (calvary ring is broken, sight slide is missing or maybe never existed). Any help or information on the gun is appreciated. I would also like to find any accessories available or a collector should have. I am a civil war freak who is new to the collecting of guns.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I am not sure if this is the place I register. I'll give it a shot anyway. Please register me in the Spencer Shooting Society. My Id will be my SASS alias: Crossdraw. SASS # 6929.

As for my background information: I have two original Spencer carbines. I use one for civil war reenacting, the other is as I purchased it 8-9 years ago: still in its orginal condition. I am currently considering retiring the gun I use for CW as I blieve it has taken too much abuse over the past 9 years. I am looking to obtain one, perhaps two reproduction Spencer carbines (56-50 of course).

I haven't done any cowboy shooting in a few years, but it is always in the back of my mind. I enloy and respect the cowboy way of life. Things should be as simple know as they were then.

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi everyone.
It would be a privilege to join such a group. My first Spencer, an 1865 carbine, is on its way to me across the Atlantic. Now I need to read up on converting it to center fire and loading for it. I have a lot of black powder experience with Sniders, Martini Henrys, Werndls, Sharps and Winchesters but a Spencer is something else.

Just received my 56-50 Armi yestrerday.  Must be lucky, as trigger is not too heavy (not exactly light but ok) and action works smoothly.  (Dealer description of used gun lacking in many details, I suggest you be careful buying anything from Denver Gun Room as they simply do not care for the truth).  A through cleaning of the action and barrel will improve the gun greatly.  Looks great alongside the 59 Sharps Conversion and a Trapdoor carbine.  Looking forward to loading ammo and shooting this beauty.

Hi There,
Thanks for the welcome. My name is Charles Misulia. I am from Lumpkin, GA and have been reading the forum now for a while. I just traded some CW weapons for a new Armi Sport Spencer Rifle that should be delivered in a couple of days. I got the 44-40 because the ammo is easy to come by and the blanks cheap to make (w/410 shells).
Anyway, my fascination with the Spencer started a few years ago when I began writing a book about the Battle for Columbus, Georgia which was fought at the end of the Civil War between the forces of James H. Wilson's Cavalry Corps, Military Division of the Mississippi and the Georgia and Alabama (CS) Reserve Forces. The use of Spencers played a major part in the Union victory at Columbus.
  Thanks for the welcome.

Knightmare reporting for duty!

Been fascinated with Spencers for a little over 30 years. Have a relative who was in Wilder's Hatchet/Lightning Brigade (B Co, 123rd Illinois Volunteer Infatry). Always been a lifelong dream to own/shoot one, and only recently found out that reproductions are available. Don't know how much time I've got left but I hear the clock ticking -now more than ever. Found the 'Society' 3 days ago and joined 2 days ago!
Was a paratrooper for my 'Uncle' many moons ago and take the correlation between 'mounted infantry' and 'Airborne' to heart. Thanks to all of you for your expertise and for just being here.

I'm interested in joining the Society. After my grandparents passed away, we were cleaning the attic. (What we called the 'old chamber' of the farm house) and discovered a Spencer Carbine. Don't know much about it, but would like to find out anything and everything about it. It has a serial number of 40532 and the following;
- Spencer Repeating-
Rifle Company Boston     S.

Knowing the family it may have been a reproduction but the chance is there it is real. I included the S. because it is stamped five spaces after the word Boston. There is also a "&" at the top of the chamber. If nothing else I hope to clean it up and get to shoot it. Looks OK, but if it's to old and to far gone, it'll just become a wall hanger. I'm happy to have found your site.

Hello SSS,

I have been a Civil War reenactor for about 20 years or so. I purchased a Taylors '65 rifle in 56-50 for my late war infantry impression. I have always been fascinated with the Spencer rifle and now that I have owned one, it has grown even more. I love this rifle!

I am really hoping to start doing some loading and live firing with it in the very near future.

Hi, Troops,

I am a  gun freak that loves shooting the old ones. I can't afford collector quality arms so I pick up non-shooters at gun shows and refurbish/repair/rebuild them as I find the parts. I've been lurking in the bushes waiting for my S&S center fire breech block for my 1865 to arrive before I signed up----It arrived today, so sign me up. It looks like I  have one of the 5% that will probably need extensive fitting. They didn't send any instructions so I'll have to call them in the morning. My Spencer (s/n 19324) has been "cowboy customized".  The original rear sight has been removed, a flat filed  and a home made one with elevator dovetailed to barrel. The steel front sight blade has been replaced with a filed down 1800's dime).  I was really surprised that the  sights work so well.  The silver blade really shows up good for these seventy-one year old eyes!! Other than the sights, my old Spencer is original, in excellent shape and IS A SHOOTER! I'll be picking you expert's brains on reloading, etc., later.  I'm an "old guy" but like a kid when it comes to old guns, damascus knives and classic cars. I love to throw big chunks of lead down range in a cloud of white smoke and do so all year long here in the Nevada high desert. I hunt chukar with a Grade IV Damascus L.C. Smith 10 gauge and mule deer with my 45-90 86 Winchester (1889).  Getting long winded so I'd better close.  Talk to you later.

It has a mirror bore with sharp rifling. The gun is in excellent mechanical condition. The gun has not been altered in any way. Thank you for any assistance. - Mike

Howdy All
I would like to sign up
Overload Killkenney is my CAS moniker
I shoot in Canada (around Calgary Alberta)
I just picked up an 1865 SRC  Spencer Carbine
Serial Number 1401
20 inch barrel
56 50 I think , but it has rimfire and centerfire firing pins
I chambered a shortened piece of primed 8x50R Lebel Brass and set it off OK
but the blade extractor will not pick up the .622 Rim of this cartridge case
I see the Starline stuff has an even smaller rim
Perhaps 50/70 will work
Looks like I've got my work cut out for me to get this gun to function properly.
I'll do some reading around here to see if I can't figure it out.
PS
Does anyone know where to get a breech block spring (the big main one)?
thanks

I have already registered with CAS and am requesting to join the SSS as i have an original 56-56 carbine that has been in my family for generations. the serial # on it is 13536. I would be very interested in finding out some of the history of it.  I have coverted it to shoot center fire and reload my own ammo for it using 50/70 and 50/90 brass and a Rapine .546 mould.  I still have all the original parts for it.

I just inheirted a nice Spencer carbine and know little about it.  It's s/n is 106xx, patent date 1860, there is a cartouche on the left wrist that has what appears to be the initials "DAP".  No caliber markings.

For 150 years old it's in very good condition although the wood has developed some cracks, the metal finish is worn away but not rusted, the bore rifling is still there but is rough.  The magazine spring is very rusted and looks to be on its last legs.  Would a spring from Chiappa work?

If safe and feasible I'd like to shoot it a time or two.

How do the conversions to shoot modern pistol ammo work?  Is there a barrel liner?

Any and all info you could provide me would be most helpful and appreciated.

Thank you

I own a Spencer rifle that was one of the 700 modified by the Springfield Armory for the ordnance trials of 1871.
I am in the process of converting the .56-50 rimfire to shoot centerfire black powder ammuntion.
I also own a Sharps rifle with similar Springfield Armory changes (and a Remington, and Ward-Burton), all in all, the Secretary of the Army tested and reviewed over 40 rifles and carbines in the 1870's, with 5 rifles making the final cut, but all lost out to the Springfield Trapdoor.
Happy to find this site, and continue learning about these 140 year old rifles that still shoot great today!

Wil O. wants to be added to the muster roll.
Enlisted in the Iowa Volunteers, issued a Lorenz,
carried the dern thing down south aways,
and hated it every moment.
Would've loved to had the Spencer instead.
Luckily, did not see enough action involving shooting,
mostly occupying and marching.
Only good thing about my Lorenz, the length with the
bayonet on the end kept me further away from the foul smelling rebs.

(hope the remark about the rebs is OK. My great, great, great grandaddy
actually wrote those words in a letter to home)

Registering here.. I have a m1860 Spencer, original block and a center fire conversion block.  I'm inn need of proper bullet mold actually or the where abouts of one as the 50/70 casings I've adapted, the outside diameter after fire forming, is the same diameter one needs for the bullet.  So, to make it work (I think) I'd need to have the bullet stepped down to take in account of the casing wall thickness to chamer proberly.  Thanks in advance and any help/assistance would be appriciated.

Hi All, I`m a keen shooter collector of American Spencer rifles/carbines. I have a slightly wood worn but otherwise mech. excellent Spencer 6 groove 1860 M rifle in 56/56 serial no:- 3852 Insp. Samuel Leonard; also a Spencer 6 groove carbine 1865 M was 56/50 in near mint cond. serial no:- 20752 conv. to 50/70 : and a 1871 Spencer 3 groove 50/70 Rifle which is one of the few marriages of a 1865 carbine (Burnside) to a rifle barrel serial No:-30875 which with the S&S conv. block still shoots well at 200 yds and everyone in the Club wants a go. I would like help in finding what regiments these arms were original attached to and possibly the soldier who carried same.             Cheers from across the Pond      Flinter

Two Flints, just sent along an email to join up. The Pathfinder out of Riverside, Ohio. Just picked up a new Taylor's carbine in 56-50 this afternoon. Weird thing is tho, its frame is blued not case hardened and has some beautiful burl figure to the stock. not seen another like it although there must be others around. Oh well, can't wait to get out to the range with it. Thanks for letting this old scout sign up.

Please enroll me in the Spencer Shooting Society.  I'll also send you and email.  My first Spencer was a NM Rifle that I foolishly sold about ten years ago.
Currently I am the caretaker for an 1860 Carbine # 28176, which was modified by Springfield and has the 1865 hammer, Stabler device and a 'TSJ' cartouche on the stock.  The barrel is still 22" long with six lands and grooves, though.

Don't have a Spencer yet but will!
Recently discovered my GG Uncle was a sniper with Company D,100th Pennsylvania Roundheads. He writes in a letter home after the "Battle of the Crater" at Petersburg that he fired 100 rounds that day "and took my time to it".
Now I am bitten by the bug to own one of these fine rifles. My hope is to find out whether he was issued a rifle or carbine. He calls it a rifle in his letter and he was Infantry,so my guess is rifle.......but I hope to find out for sure before buying.

I'd like to join the Spencer Shooting Society but not sure how. I'm registered as Marshal Davis with Cas City. I have had three Chiappa Spencer carbines but have settled on the one I have now in .45 Colt. I could ask for a better operating rifle. My first was 56-50 carbine that operatd great but shooting was way off. I discovered after I had sold it to a reenactor who only wanted to fire blanks that it was part of a batch that Taylor's had gotten in with bad barrel crowns.  That expalins why it shot way off to the right badly. My second carbine was 44 Russian. Extractor problems and feedingproblems led me toget rid of that one quickly. One last try was a carbine in .45 Colt. I struck gold with that one. And yes I shoot black (well Pinnacle) in it exclusively. Accurate, fast and smooth and no failures. What more could I want. Well maybe a rifle.

Hey Folks!  Looking to join this fine group shooting one of to coolest rifles ever made.  I've got 2 so far.  One is a Armi-Sport that I've turned into a 1866-68 style Sporting Rifle in 56-50.  The other is an original 56-46 Sporting Rifle.  I shoot and hunt with both.
I'd love to host a Spencer shoot here at my place if folks would care to have one.  I'm in West Central Georgia near Buena Vista, GA.
I have a 365 yrd rifle range that we could use for it, but if you need more distance there is an 800 yrd range close to me.
Plenty of room to ride horses on dirt rds in this area to fill down time.  Always looking to meet new friends who like me, just can't get enough of these rifles.  IJ

I wish to join the SSS I have an 1865 src converted to a rifle by Springfield. I am installing a centerfire block- follower am having problems.

1) I am having a time figuring out brass.
2) 50-70 shortened brass won't chamber due to the rim dia being to large.
3) And starline brass will chamber all the way with a little extra room around the case head but won't eject because extractor skips by.
-No room for thicker extractor. My extractor is thicker than a hack saw blade .0045 to .0028
          - Narrower rim dia lets brass go to one side of receiver half way out of chamber then extractor skips by.
4) turned down 50-70 brass till it chambered and it was  .002 bigger than starline 56-50
5) the rimfire fireing pin has mushroomed the chamber in some but a punch and rattail file have fixed that some.
6) I would like to pull barrel to fix chamber mushroom  with lathe and turn rim diameter so 50-70 brass head fit.
       - thaughts ( I know it's rare but It needs to shoot)
        - I have a highly capable machines to do work
         - I am only cutting .0628 to .0650 on the rim diameter
         - that should let me use bulk starline 50-70 brass shortened. End all the ejection problems.
-Bore is .509-.510 so a .512 sizer should work figure out bullet mould then figure out trim length for crimp grove then make 300 rounds
7) how the hell dose that barrel unthread. It's soaking in Kroil for a few days befor I try to hard.

Good Day Gentlemen,

I hail from Northern British Columbia up near the Alaska border.  I've wanted to get a Spencer for a long time to use in CAS and possibly for hunting as well.  It's my understanding that the Spencer - especially the reproductions - can be a bit fussy so the plan is to listen, ask questions, and with luck figure a few things out before I decide which model and caliber to buy.

I look forward to participating in the discussions.

Just ordered a Cimarron 1865 Spencer Carbine in 45 LC from Bud's.  I am hoping it will not suffer from the dreaded cartridge feed/extraction problems.

New member here. Hoping to draw on the expertise of forum members to learn more about my grandfather's Spencer Carbine #38894 and also get advice on the best way to sell some original ammo I have. Anyone interested, I can provide photos, but don't know enough (yet) to say which cartridges I have (although I can tell that I have at least 2 or 3 of the different ammo variants).

My dad just passed along to me the family Spencer Rifle. Although I've seen it all my life, I don't know much about it except a family story. Its not in great condition, nor terrible, but the Serial number is not clear. It appears to be 3766. If there is another digit it would be at the front. The barrel is long and has 6 grooves. What I don't understand is how to tell the difference between the M1860 and M1865, so I don't know if its a civil war piece or not, confirming or debunking the family legend.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group

Hi there,
Mike McCrae from San Diego, and recent Spencer Carbine owner.
Having recently finished Shelby Foote's 3 book series on the American Civil War, as well as others, I've become fascinated with
the guns of the period. I also own a Colt contract rifled musket, and a Uberti Walker. I would love to shoot the Spencer in the future, but may need some information in order to properly prepare the .50-70 brass. I'll try and resize my pictures in order to post them for you. My Spencer serial number is: model 1860,  # 48651
Best regards to you all, and hopefully I have completed the membership app correctly....

Dr Mike

Two Flints:  I would like to join the Spencer Shooting Society. I have a Spencer that I want to shoot but I do not know if it will take the 56-56 casing or the 56-50. The barrel measures 22" so I think it is an 1860 model. It has 6 grooves/lands. There is no magazine cutoff. When I get back home, I will get the SN and send it.
Best,

Hello! Horse Cavalryman here,   Been doin' that for a while.  Tried SASS back in the 80's and couldn't afford the ammo.  Spencers are really what brought U.S. Cavalry into the modern era. With some help from a yard of steel and the occasional belt gun.  I've ridden with
Spencer carbine on a sling and in the thimble. They weigh a ton and that's with blank ammo.  They work now just like then. The Johnny Rebs time their rushs to volleys from Sharps and don't take kindly to ya's emptying magazine in their last rush.
A "Gun Broke" horse will still start when you fire a carbine from the saddle.
My fantasy Spencer is only possible with Chiappa's centerfire action.
Have a good Ride!  I've earned my #4 slot (Horseholder)

I am trying to learn what I can about my Dad's old Spencer Repeating Rifle, serial number 23,029.
He acquired it in 1958 while teaching at a First Nations school in Fond du Lac, Saskatchewan, Canada.
This is a remote, northern community.
The anecdotal story from the priests at the school was that the gun had crossed the Cda/US border with Sitting Bull after the Little Big Horn and was eventually traded north.
My Dad passed away a number of years ago and I never had the chance to speak with him about that.
Any information on the rifle would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Michaeldoc here,

I do not (yet) own a Spencer, however this is my jumping off point to learn about this iconic weapon from the experts.
My first question is what can one reasonably expect to pay for a "very nice" (subjective) condition 1860 Spencer carbine with Civil War provenance? Without provenance? What should a buyer be considering when contemplating a buy? There are scores of Civil War sites and half as many Spencers advertised for sale.

Last questions: (1) what is latest edition of Blue Book of Gun Values? I have a Thirty-Second edition.  (2) What is the latest edition of Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms?

Many thanks,

Michaeldoc

Respectfully request to join the Spencer Shooting Society.  Have been shooting Spencers for a few years.  Got my first Spencer back in 99 from Mr Romano
sn 10003.    The carbine shot as good as it looked.  I used Ballard rifle and Cartridge LLC brass and paper patch bullets.  I have owned a couple orginal Spencers but never did convert them to center fire.   Have a Chiappa Spencer now and works great.   Had to make a new magazine tube for it an it solved a few issues on feeding.  Also worked the mainspring over to lighten the trigger pull and honed the sear.   Thanks in advance for letting me join.

Fallon Kid here. Just got my Dixie carbine 56-50. Not my first gun but new to this caliber and Spencer. I drop my own bullets and reload with Blue, Red and Green.  I only use single press for 45-70 and up except for 32S&W and 38S&W. I like old worthless top breaks. I do Cowboy, Wild Bunch, Long Range BPCR and not very good but I love the spirit and do have fun. A great match for me is when all my guns run the whole match and don't get a procedural.  I also dabble in front loaders LR with my Whitworth and Gibbs. Thanks Jerry, Northern Nevada

I used to own an original 56-56 Rifle and shot it; (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXSmou_HcRU) still have the mold. 'Still love Spencers.
Currently I shoot a 44 Evans Long (1877) when I get a chance.  'Lots of information on reloading for the Evans.
