Revovler wads--Lubricated benefits??

For those cap and ball revolver shooters are there any benefits of Lubricated VS plain wads? it has been years since i used anything but target loads with fillers and was going to up my charges to full powder with a wad under the ball and no grease on top of ball.

You may want to take a look at the EPP-UG or the EPP-36 depending on your caliber.  Both carry all the lube that is needed in the Big Lube groves.

I would not bother with a plain wad. To me it would be a waste of time and money compared to using a filler like cream of wheat or cornmeal. If you use a lot of filler it will scour out the barrel fouling fairly well. I would use either a lubricated wad under the ball/bullet or one of DDs "grease wagon" type bullets for the C&B.

I make my wads like this using tallow rendered from beef kidney fat It makes a very solid tallow mixed 50:50 with common paraffin wax and is a lot less expensive that bees wax.

I usually just go buy Circle Fly 1/2" thick 45 caliber wads from Track of the Wolf (2 bags of 500 has the same shipping cost as one bag). Then I either split them in half or thirds and then lube them by melting cooking oil and deer tallow (only because we shot some fat deer, lard would suffice). It is easy to split the wads with a box cutter while watching a movie or TV. I toss them into bags labeled thin, medium & thick. None are exact but "close enough" suffices. It comes out to about 2 cents a wad and is not as labor intensive as using felt.

Well ... I'm with Hellgate.  Plain wad would accomplish nothing except taking up space.  If your going to wad, use a lubed wad.  Either home made or commercial totally up to you.  Personally, If I were going to use any "lube" (which I don't) I would be casting up some EPP UG (45) or EPP 36 (shameless plug for Dirty Dick Dastardly) as both of those bullet carry a boatload of lube.  I am also of the school that a big 'ol wad of lube over the bullet serves no purpose except to mess up the inside of your holster.

I don't use ANY lube.  'Cause I are one of "THEM" ..... those that choose to shoot APP.  A swell sub that requires no lube.  And cleans up really easy.  Neener Neener Neener

I've never used just dry felt wads cut from felt. Still have a good supply of Eastern Maine 44 and 36 wads that come prelubed, but I always give em a little more in a concoction depending on the month of mutton tallow, beeswax, paraffin, and olive oil--depending on the flavor of the month. Have always been going to run a test using the wads as they come and my 'souped' up ones. A while back I bought a sheet of felt from 'the outfit that sells it'-can't recall the name to punch out my own wads. A 'been-gonna' project. One of these days. A unlubed wad as the others posted is just a space filler, be handier though than using cream of wheat which I tried once just to do it. PITA is all I can say about that.

Ever tried Cheerios? You could use the sound of the crunch as a guide for compression. Or maybe Rice Crispies--that "Snap, Crackle, and Pop" could be used as a compression guide also!!!

back in the day, when I reenacted ( mounted cavalry ) we used Coco puffs as wads

 , and Coco Roos for 36 cal.

Major and CoffinM'--LOL LOL Looking back at my Rice Crispy filler--you would be able to gage compression by the subsiding 'Snap Crakle Pop, ie-the less you hear, the more smashed (compressed) it is. I better hit the hay before I post more needless information-gun show tomorrow.

I've tried many types of lubricated wads    I my C&B revolvers that is  .
I found no advantages, but potential disadvantages.
MY standard loads contain 3F black powder (yup, the real stuff) & a round ball.
Top with a very small amount of generic vegetable shortening (from a long-necked condiment dispenser - $.99 at wallyworld).

Does not run out into my holsters (even in 100 degree weather-retained by surface tension).

Bore stays consistently clean, fouling is soft, accuracy & performance is maintained. Oh - it's super cheap, too.

Wish I had stumbled onto that miracle Generic Veggie Shortening 35 years ago. It works so well I'd get rich selling the stuff.


The barrel being clean with just some 'soft' fouling would be like the soft fouling was acting like a lubricant.  That borders on sheer genius.


Now I feel really stupid and will have to explore that feeling of usefulness in therapy. Either that or do years of research finding that kind of barrel steel.


My head tryin to wrap around that Generic Veggie stuff is about to implode.   On the other hand when I try something with the Generic stuff I may get super happy and buy the wifey another cap&baller fer me to shoot for her.

Introduced to black powder shooting back in 1964, And was taught to use Crisco to cover the chambers. Messy yes but it worked. Still use Crisco today.

Using butter flavored Crisco for lube and hominy grits for filler makes shooting smell like breakfast time in Georgia
