I Have Been Working on Guide Books and a Quarterly
« on: April 19, 2018, 04:01:28 PM »
Gentlemen,

I have been working on a series of books outlining the actual historic anthropology for the various elements of American History.  I wanted the design to have an authentic look and feel so that living historians can have it out in their camp without spoiling the ambiance with a farby modern intrusion.

It is based on my 30-years experience as a primitive outdoorsman and historic researcher.  I cite only period practices that have been proven to work in my field testing.  This has been a project I have wanted to do for a long time now and I am in contact with some of my New York publishing cronies. I am already in the stage of trademark-copyright protection but still have to finalize my edit of the content.

I started realizing that over the last 20 years, the quality of woodcraft, camp craft and historic knowledge was really starting to fall off.  I immersed myself in discussion with many old-timers as to what I wanted to do and came up with this for the coming generations.  A lot of millinneals have no interest in being "snowflakes" and would love to know more about the outdoors, self reliance and rugged individualism but few are coming forward to teach them.  I want to contribute my part because they are not the enemies of our hobby; they are the heirs to it.

Here is a sneak peek of the cover art I have so far.  The old prints are now public domain but I still need to go over it all with legal just to make sure every thing is air tight.  With all that said, here are what my first 4 books are about.

...and here is the California Gold Rush version.  The personal tricks for camp craft, woodcraft, and tricks of the trade will change as specified by the period accounts of each edition.  I don't want readers to see the same stuff in each book so it will be different every time.

Thanks Gentlemen,

These will essentially be like the Boy Scouts Manual for each time period. The trick was to not start looking repetitive through the basic daily grind so I had to mix it up. I choose different styles of shelter making, cooking, woodcraft, etc. for each volume.  So far, the plainsman's version will be the most comprehensive on  trail life.  Everything will be based on my direct experience practicing researched and documented period practices in the field.

Here is a shot of my field notebook.

Dave  Your field notebook remind me of those of Lewis and Clark. We appreciate your dedication to document the woodcraft of our forefathers.  I live just down stream from Sutter's Mill, so I'm especiailly  looking forward to the gold rush book.   Thanks  Jw

Great job, as always Dave -

I think I will print out a copy of Capt Marcy's  "Prarie Traveler" to carry around,  since it was
the "official guidebook " of 1859!

Glad you asked Prof. Thanks for the feedback Jack and Niederlander.  I will have some of my publishing cronies help me with formatting and production.  Until now, I have done technology industry books but it's going to be more fun to do one about my lifelong hobby.

Randolph Marcy did a great job with his publication.  In my book I reference some of his methods in addition to methods from a lot of other period writers after I have field tested  the concept.  I will be listing  the most practical methods. I;m excited to also be working with a great illustrator who is a top researcher in this hobby. I am still working on a copy price but it should not be over $14.95.

I appreciate the encouragement from everyone here.  It makes me want to put more into it than I had previously planned.

Going over the notes on some shooting articles.  Here are some talking points I am putting into an article regarding the proper care and feeding of the Colt's Revolver.

Looks like hours and days of pouring over. I judge most of my books by how many times they've been read and as much as I try to keep them in good shape the best ones are quite worn.

How do I make sure to pre-order or get my name on the list when this is ready?

I will be giving the people here on this site and on the social media site fists chance on the publication.  I still need to get the illustrations formatted into the book, set up the website, create a pay-pal account, run the first edition (500-1000) units, and set up the sales site.

As a sneak peek, here is the social media site for the Frontier American Illustrated News.
