Keeping what made the West safe, alive

I found this gun about a week ago and had to buy it. It was made in the late 1880's in London. It is a real nicely engraved 12 gauge with 2 1/2 inch chambers, bright bores and locks up tight. It is pictured with another hammergun, a George Daw underlever on the left...

I've got an obsession with old hammer doubles.  None are as nice as yours and all are domestic and many are 10 gauge.  I have an LC Smith Syracuse 10 gauge,  a Colt 1878 12 gauge, Colt 1878 10 gauge in higher grade,  Remington 1889 12 and 10, Remington and Sons 1882 10,  Baker Syracuse 10 gauge and several others.

Shrapnel, you do realize that you can only hunt 'grouse' on an estate with a beaut like that. And don't forget your manservant to reload it for you. Tally ho.

I have one of these made about the same time frame only it is hammerless. It is highly engraved and every time you look at it you see a different bird in the engraving. It appears to be a very high end gun with gorgeous wood. I can find almost no info on these great guns.

Shrapnel, those shotguns are beautiful! I used to hear people expound upon the handling qualities of the British shotguns. Then I acquired a nice Joseph Manton 12ga hammer double with 26" barrels and finally understood what they were talking about! What a joy! I foolishly sold it off in order to help finance an older car restoration. Wish I would have kept it as I also prefer hammer guns, but mine get used at Cowboy matches and I would have felt guilty letting that thing bounce around in a guncart.
