Uberti 1876 in 50-95 WCF
« on: November 10, 2017, 11:31:07 AM »
Gentlemen... has anyone used the Accurate molds  51- 335V, 51-350C, or 51-350CL in their 50-95's. And, if so, which one did you specifically use. Performance?

i never had any 100 yd. accuracy luck in my rifle with the lighter bullets and ubertis 1 in 48" twist. i tried many molds, but not accurate molds. i did not want to spend the money on say a 350 grainer when other similar makes i tried where terrible. i collect molds, so have a few to play with and the old ideal/lyman 512138 has out performed the previous 6 light to medium wt. versions i tried.

I'm thinking on trying the 51-350C . What kind of 100 yd. accuracey are you guy's getting with the Uberti 50/95 and 1-48 ROT . I'm running a custom barrel 24" long 50/95 with a 1-38" ROT on an original action . The 300 gr. and 350 gr. bullets are giving good accurate groups @ 100 yd.  with Swiss Bp.   4" and 5",,,, 5 shot groups . About all I can do with iron sights at 100 yd.  ,,,DT

4-5 in groups with a short barrel is some great 100 yd. shooting, the faster twist cant hurt. are you using a tang sight to work up loads?    i have a quality one on my 28" rifle to help in development.

thinking about taking mine elk hunting today.

On that one I use a Lyman tang sight , helps a lot ! At 75yd. I tend to do a lot better on group size .   Good luck on the Elk today . DT

I received my Presidio 76 from Cimarron this week. Bore/groove diameter a full .515"-.5155". Ordered an appropriate (size) mold from Accurate. Specifically the 51-350C. Must say I was somewhat surprised about the bore size. Severely limits what molds/bullets I could use. Will have to wait 4-5 plus weeks to, hopefully, be able to cast a bullet that will prove to be accurate.  Like the Top (ZZ) song says.." It ain't all good, but its what we got".

Be sure to report back on how that bullet performs.  Many people use this site for research prior to making their own decisions and, as you may have noticed, there isn't a lot of info as to what works well in Uberti guns in this caliber.

Thanks.

Will do. Nothing came easy with the 1st Uberti 76 in 45-60 WCF. Vowed I would not buy another. Then along comes the Presidio carbine. In 50-95 no less. So much for promises. Hold out hope the preparation, not to mention the expense, will pay off.

examine your presidio closely , check the muzzle crown right away for concentricity. mine was absolutely atrocious. had to re-cut it in my lathe!  soo sad when one pays this kind of money.

I will. Still nonplussed over the bore/groove diameter. Curious what your serial number is. Mine was #38.

Thats a couple of sad stories !
My Uberti 45/75 turned out nice with no hassles - shoots a 458 sized slug at 335grain or a 405 grain both over a full case of black - the trigger pull was atrocious out of the box but I blamed lawyers for that - got it worked out reasonable now - I shoot soft boolits (in all my lead boolit guns) just enough alloy to make em cast ok - there seems to be a deal in the US to use hard cast and I wonder whether that is behind a lot of the accuracy troubles  that are reported? Also think it might be more difficult to get some of these old style guns going properly with smokeyless and subs than it is with a charge of decent blackpowder --maybe??
If I was buying another '76 I would look for a 50/95 with 22inch barrel - I am only a little dude and that 76 of mine is 11pounds+ with a fulll magazine of 400grainers - might be me favorite gun tho!

Received my Accurate mold for the 50-95 the day before Thanksgiving. About a week or so after I ordered it.  Brass blocks. Literally a  work of art. Cast up 150 or so today. The bullets were the exact size I requested. Will be necessary to make an oversize expander plug for the RCBS Legacy dies.  And, I am waiting for the .517" lubricator-size die. Just about there.

Shot the Presidio  last weekend. The bullets from the Accurate mold shot great. Worked up three loads...4198, 4895,+ 5744.

All shot well.  Albeit a bit high. The 4198 load, used by others on this forum, seemed to have a slight delay in going off. Might try

magnum primers.

Magnum primers are a step in the right direction, but, you probably need a filler, such as the foam wads sold by Kynoch. They use them in their own cartridges. I use them for my 450 No. 1 Express and my 50-95. IMR 4198 is a great choice for NFB loads, but, more often than not, requires a filler to keep the charge in place to ensure reliable ignition. I tried one cartridge in my 450 Express without the foam. The hangfire was interesting, to say the least! Good Luck!

I will chime in here on the filler.  In the Uberti 45-75 been using Pufflon from the start.

Remember on fillers, start from scratch on the load process as adding the filler changes the
pressure curve so working up slowly as always is a must.  Best of luck with the project!

When the subject of fillers comes up, it makes me nervous. I purchased a bottle (Pufflon) some years ago, but have not used it to any degree. Have read on this and other forums, conflicting information on its use. Do you gentleman feel its safe to use in the 50-95? Fearful, because of my lack of experience with it, of "ringing" the chamber/barrel. Might use tissue paper with the 4198 loads and go from there. Thanks for the feedback. On an aside note, the rifle consistently shoots high at 50-100 yards. Took a Uberti  blade sight and brazed (1/8") on the top ridge. Will file it down until proper elevation is obtained.

I have used tissue paper for 45-70 loads, with no issues. We all take chances when using fillers in our NFB loads. Kynoch uses the foam wads in their cartridges, full nitro and NFB, which made the choice easier for me. I would like to think, that, if the Kynoch cartridges were ringing their own test barrels, and/or customers' barrels, they would not use, or sell them.
