Uberti 1875 Outlaw APP and trigger reach for female hands
« on: July 01, 2017, 02:19:13 PM »
Here is my dilemma: my girlfriend "Sadie Jules"  has been watching on the sidelines at the matches, but eventually wants to join in and shoot. However she wants to be different among the lady shooters and choose a pistol not in my wheelhouse. (I only shoot Colt repro). Majority of the ladies in the posse shoot a Model No. 3 reproduction, but Sadie saw a photo of a 7 1/2" Uberti '75 Outlaw in 45 Colt and had to have it. They are quite rare to see in our posse so there is little try before you buy.  So my questions are:

1. How does it shoot with APP or is she going to have issues I heard about the '58 and fouling on the base pin?

2. She has small hands and fingers so I'm worried the trigger reach is a little farther than the Uberti SAA 1873 as the frame geometry is different.  Do people with small hands have a problem shooting this revolver?

Trigger reach is about 1/4" longer than Colt SAA

The '75 is a great gun, but it doesn't handle fouling well. When I shot mine with BP, I would put some extra BP lube over every other chamber mouth like one would with a muzzleloading Revolver. This, combined with Big Lube bullets, gave decent performance. Can't speak for APP. Mine didn't like Alliant Black MZ, which I've heard is similar.

Posting from my phone, so I might have some typos. My apologies.

In my very limited experience, the 1875 is a large and robust pistol, not friendly to small hands.

I have a pair of 1875 Uberti's in 44-40.  They would not go five rounds before seizing up...usually on the 4th or 5th round.  I sent them off to Happy Trails (The Smith Shop) a few years ago and he modified the cylinders to accept a steel gas check bushings.  The bushing looks similar to the Colt bushing with the scoop to deflect the gases from the pin.  I have not had a problem with fouling since.

He had to cut the frames slightly to accommodate these larger bushings.

I wonder if your context is BP, because my Outlaw 5.5" 44-40 shoots great with smokeless (700X). I will comment that the throat sizes call for .430 bullets rather than .428. Gun is so accurate and easy to shoot that it always makes me look better than with other guns. I have small hands and never noticed any problem handling the gun. I suspect the 7.5" barrel would be a rather different experience. I wonder if the lady would fare better with the 5.5", never mind authenticity or looking like a movie gun.

My wife has small hands and had no problems with the trigger reach when she tried mine.  She did not care for the weight of the pistol (I have arms like an ape so I don't really notice).
