Lee Marvin's gun belts ala The Professionals
« on: May 08, 2017, 08:53:26 AM »
Are there any of our talented leather makers in Cas City building a copy of Lee Marvin's rig from The Professionals? The 1911 on the right side but a crossdraw for a 4.5 inch New Service on the left.

Not much to them - an issued M1916 Hip Holster, double magazine pouch and an issued Garrison Belt - coupled with a regular left-hand commercial hip holster.

The belt goes through the belt slots on the GI holster.

Don't see any sort of cross-draw.

My thinking was that it consisted of multiple pieces, one with a large circular shape with a pattern that was located in front where a normal belts buckle would have been. This piece was connected to the rest of the rig with a buckle on each side in front of each holster. The only rub would be that I shoot duelist and my crossdraw would be where the left buckle would be so my revolver holster would have to sit in front of the left buckle.

Look again - there are a number of pictures/stills that show the arrangement, and it's nothing like you imagine.

I stand corrected. The belt that has duel buckles with the round front appears to be a pants belt, his holsters are supported by a plain jane leather belt. I would then ask the talented leathermakers in CAS city if anyone could build a double buckle rig like this?

I'm sure that you enjoyed Pat Buttrum or was it Alan Hale as Dutch.

Shouldn't be much of a problem. The information needed would be your actual measurement around your pants, thru the inside of the belt loops, plus the height of the inside of the belt loops and the location of the loops on each side of the centerline of the pant fly, so that the buckles wouldn't interfere with the loops. Not exactly sure what you mean by "the round front", however.  (Seems to me that I saw John Wayne with a similar arrangement on his gunbelt, the probable reason there being that the original belt had...uh, umm, cough...shrank!  ::) )

As I recall, his gun belt was wired to his pants belt at the center of his back to keep it from falling down around his ankles in action scenes. If you look at a straight rear shot of him, you can see it.

I made one myself, but put four double shotgun shell loops on the front panel. Then I made another for 16 gauge and dyed it black.

The only drawback is that the shells snug a mite too closely to my shameless display of good living to extract quickly on the clock!

I saw an old Kirk Douglas movie the showed him hiding a Remington double derringer behind the front panel. Packing Iron shows a Mexican gunbelt with the double chape, decorated with pititado.

Thanks for the info. The double buckle belt style with the carved center that I was referring to is a piteado ( Google's spelling). Alot of them naturally have horse motifs which would work if the Robert Ryan character wore it as he was the horse wrangler but as Lee Marvin's character was the soldier of fortune weapons expert I'm thinking that a crossed Lewis gun with a Springfield rifle or a browning wc would be more appropriate. I've seen a photo somewhere of a modern one that had 4 shotgun shells in the center but wouldn't need to do that as  I usually wear a mills shotgun shell belt. Our match director, stage creator thinks nothing of having 6 or 7 shotgun rds in a stage. I'll have to fire up my drawing board to see what I can come up with.

I think the one Marvin wore just had a rosette design. It'll be interesting to see what you finally put on it.

Now, that's a good idea!

It looks like the main belt is a billet with a buckle at each end, and the front part is a billet with holes at each end.  Cartridge or shell loops on interchangeable front panels make a lot of sense.

I don't know that it's historically correct...  I have never seen an antique example.  One of those "could have been" situations.  It sounds practical, though.

I seem to be the ONLY CAS shooter that wears his 8 rd shotgun slide on his left butt cheek, behind where I wear my 1911 mags for Wild Bunch or my left holster. I don't have a stomach bulge, it just seems to be right - for me. I like a clean front. Makes it easier to bend over.

I've yet to fail in finding my shells when I need them. Bugs the hell out of me to see guys wearing a shotshell bandolier like a bra over Molson Muscle bellies.

For those who don't know, Molson is one of our great Canadian breweries.
