new pietta 1851 navy

Well I finally got the 51 navy in .36 i've been after, got it at cabelas and its good. Not great but good, the fit to finish on the grip is sub par. It doesn't fit the receiver very well and has some high points and low points, also I don't know if the wedge is suppose to be pulled out easy with just pulling it by hand, my ASM 44 cal navy doesn't do it so should I be worried? other than that I really enjoy it more than my ASM one, but that one is my first hand gun so it has a spot on my list.

I bought this pair of 51 Navy Confederate 44 Sheriff's models in 44 from Cabelas on Black Friday sale. The salesman even found a conservative numbered pair.  The wood fit is very good for these days and the grip frames have the Colt SAA profile rather than being flaired like some other Pietta 51s.  I have been vere impressed with these two guns. I cleaned up the actions a little.  The wedges do pull all the way out rather easily.

Im glad that I have this .36 navy now, I like my .44 one but something about having the historically correct caliber is always fun, thinking about saving and getting a uberti or a 2nd gen colt C series.

Before you play with it much (or at all) take it apart and fit the Locking Bolt to the Bolt Notches in the cylinder.  Pietta guns are famous
for oversize bolts that cause throw-by and burring of the notches in the cylinder.  I'll refer you to Larsen E. Pettifogger's articles preserved
over on "The Open Range" for tuning the Pietta.

native shooter, that's a nice looker with the new grip shape. Does it shoot to point of aim?

I haven't actually taken it too paper yet, I found a piece of tin siding that I was shooting and wasn't completely paying attention where the bullets landed

So I took my navy out and shot it, it prints about a 1ft high less than 25 yards. pretty fun too shoot and see where the bullet actually lands

It's a given on 99% of all cap 'n ball revolvers that a person will need to either make a taller sight or have some one dovetail it. I won't own one that shoots that high without fitting a new front sight that shoots to POA.

I got used to it pretty quickly, I don't mind it. Some shots it was dead on to where I aimed though. It's a pretty good navy, to it has a bit of resistance when cocking it to full cock even when fully clean.

I'll go back to my earlier post.  Take it out of the box.  Wipe the "goo" off.  Fondle it.  Do NOT cycle it.  Take it apart and FIT THE BOLT to the cylinder.   Also subtest you check the Barrel to Cylinder gap and wedge fit.  Both may well need attention.
