Somebody talk some sense into me!
« on: July 30, 2015, 08:14:47 AM »
I will likely get off work early today, and make a trip to Collector's Firearms.  I'm going to check out several Trapdoor rifles which they show in their on-line inventory, plus an 'ought 3....

Maybe I should wait until I try these 460 bore bullets in my carbine to see if accuracy improves.
Naw....I need a trapdoor rifle, too.
They have a few '73 models for under $900 that look like they'd make good shooters.  One is under $700, and sure looks good on-line.  I'm don't know that it will look good after my wife gets hold of it...in fact, I may not be able to see it if she puts it where she has threatened!

"When did you get that one?" She said.

"Oh this old thing? It's been in the gun safe quite a while."   :)

You didn't say that they had Rolling Blocks! In that case the only sensible thing to do is to bring home at least 3.

Collector's Firearms in Houston is where I got my 1870 Navy Rolling Block last fall.  They have a lot of neat stuff, however if you ask about any of the antique arms they have to find the right person. Most of them only know about the modern arms.

Pitspitr...the problem is that she will see it on the credit card bill!

I will likely just "look" today, and compare.  I'm at a quandry for what to purchase for a GAF rifle.
My current rifle is an H&R Trapdoor carbine, but the sigths are modern (buckhorn and brass bead front, both Marbles).
A trapdoor rifle will fit most any persona I could use...military, buffalo hunter, scout, civilian teamster, so I'm leaning toward one.
But, I do like the looks of the rolling blocks...just that they aren't mil spec.

You tell the truth, Scout.  I was in there once when a young employee (now a former employee of CFA) was trying to sell some Buffalo Bore 45-70 ammo to a guy wanting to use it in a trapdoor....it was the "magnum" loads....a more experienced employee prevented the potentially dangerous sale from taking place!

Cool!

I've returned empty handed from CFA.  There were two trapdoor rifles in the $800 to $1000 range that were okay...but I wasn't so taken with them that I couldn't leave them there.  One of the replica rolling blocks was too much barrel for me...bull, 30" octagonal.  The other RB repro was too much like my carbine.  The ought 3 was one of those that was marked not safe to shoot...which would be good if they put that in their on-line description of it!

Well, my quest continues...

If you still need some sense talked in to you-juts conside that if you get a Trapdoor AND an '03, then you'll have a big old Krag shaped hole in your collection! And that would not be acceptable! So you really need 3 rifles. But then, it's just not right to have an '03 but not a P-17. Your WW1 collection would be incomplete. But if you get that far, might as well get WWII covered, with an '03A3, Garand and Carbine. That's where I'm at now, but no extra money for a 50-70 Trapdoor or an M-14 clone to expand my US coverage.

Pony, looks like we've tried the same thing, only I started with a Peabody Conn Militia, then the trapdoor, Krag, '03 Mk1, 1917, '03 (Rem 1942), Garand, and carbine. And where you're looking for the M14, I'm going backward and looking for a Burnside along with the 50-70. Great minds think alike, I guess. At least till the wives catch up with us.

....At least till the wives catch up with us.

Well, I got divorced, and now I have money.  One old friend used the "I've had this old thing for Months" approach.  He would buy it, sneak it into the bed room and put it with the others.  Two months later (to the day) he would get it out in front of the wife and clean it.  Upon being accused of buying a new gun, he response would be "I've had this old thing for MONTHS."  Boy Scout leader couldn't lie.

Later Y'all

I was married for a while, gave it up as a BAD idea. Never found a reason for trying it again, although there were a couple of close calls.
My X was more interested in dope and/or booze. If she thought there was anything I was doing that might take away from her want or need... then I was just the lowest S.O.B. on the face of the planet.
Unfortunately for me was that it took 4 years for me to see it.
It is not that I am slow, I actually thought I was in Love and tried to hold out as long as I could.

I remember those days-several new guns, and 3 motorcycles.

Four years sounds more sensible than 7 did...... :(

Did much better this time, though. Even though she's not interested in the guns much. On the plus side, all bolt action milsurps look the same to her, so new ones aren't a problem-unless the antiques come direcly in the mail, or if the gunshop calls my home phone instead of my cell when one needing an FFL comes in... >:(

Gentleman, the trick is to buy "pretty" rifles. When I told my wife what I'd spent on a Henry, her response was-- You'd better NOT have spent that much. When she saw the case colors she said " Oh, that ones pretty". No more complaints. Lesson learned, always buy better condition (pretty) even if it costs more. Al.
